Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy
By "normales" it's talking about the schools for teachers, but I don't know how to say this, since docentes is teachers...any suggestions?

Discussion

NegraVera Nov 4, 2009:
Escuelas Normales o Normalistas Until not so long ago (15 to 20 years), in Ecuador as well as in Argentina, some high schools prepared students to be primary school teachers and they were called Escuelas Normales . Students graduated as primary teachers and needed no other academic title. What confuses me is if the text is talking about the students that come from those schools or the trainers of those students... It would be useful if you gave us a little more information.
MarinaM Nov 4, 2009:
Christine Walsh Nov 4, 2009:
Where and when is this from? The word 'Normal Schools' was used in English in the past with the same meaning. If it's historical I can send you useful material. Otherwise you could try 'trainers' for 'docentes'. They are after all 'teacher training colleges' nowadays.

Elementary school teachers graduated from Normal Schools

Teachers from Teaching Training Colleges (Primary School Teaching)

I would render the phrase like that, if the text you are translating comes from Mexico.

agree Sandra Holt : If it's for UK or similar then I agree, maybe "Primary School Teachers from Teacher Training Colleges" could also work well.

The faculty of Normal Schools

Since Normal School is a high school elementary teachers' training, I find the last part of the sentence redundant. Just remember that Normal Schools are disappearing (at least in Ecuador), and are being by pedagogical institutes or schools in colleges.

the Faculty of Primary Teacher Education Programs

"Teacher Education Programs" is widely used in the US (assuming your translation is for here) and could cover whatever type of program the source document is referring to, whether it is actually an old-fashioned normal school, or one of the newer programs which is integrated into a university or college.

Teachers (or Faculty) of Primary Teacher Training Colleges (Institutions)

This assumes that the text refers to present-day teacher training institutions, which would be colleges. In the past, and up till fairly recently in some countries, “normal schools” operated at the high school level.

As pointed out in the following WR thread, “docentes” aren’t necessarily professors.
Perhaps “faculty” is more generic.
