Are they saying that the lower number is a direct result of the smoother (in other words, 'como resultado' rather than 'como efecto'), or is there another possible interpretation?

Actually, I would rearrange the sentence somwhat:

"...as seen in Table 1, the models based on a hypothesis of noisy data effectively have fewer parameters as a result of the smoothing applied."

or something like that.

Table 1 shows that ...

the models ... have a more reduced number of effective parameters as a result of smoothing.

The context isn't clear (to me), but the above might work.

neutral Margaret Schroeder : It's not that the effective parameters are reduced, but that the number of parameters is, in effect, reduced, i.e. with smoothing, it's as though it were reduced.

I had meant to say "have a more reduced effective number of... Not sure about "effectively reduced", but perhaps you're right.
