I would like to know if any of you are planning on taking the
California certification exam. I would like to form a virtual study group.

If you took it already, what study tips can you give us.
Do you recomend any formal training program?

Thank you

I plan to take the exam Jul 12, 2007

Hi,

I plan to take the exam. I would like to take the upcoming one in September, but if for any reason I do not feel I'm yet ready, I'll take the one in January.

I would love to be a part of a virtual study group.

I live in San Diego, and it is my understanding the San Diego State Universirty has a class/classes specific to this subject and test.

Can't wait to be a part of this group!

Ana,

I believe there is no exam in September the next exam date is in November. I am talking about the oral exam. perhaps you are referring to the written exam. The Acebo tapes are good for the oral, but not the written

it's a very hard test Jul 12, 2007

Hi

I took the exam about two months ago, and I failed. The test was much harder than I thought. I first thought I could pass it easily, so I didn't prepare at all before I went to the exam place. There were a lot of people, I took it at UCLA. I tell you, the test is really hard, mine was on Korean, and some of the questions there were really even hard to understand. It was a lot harder than SAT and even LSAT. Don't think of it as easy. It cost more like $400 each time you tak

I'm not thinking of taking it again until after I save some money for applying it again.

You are correct Patricia, I will be taking the written exam, not the oral.
What do you think is helpful material to prepare for the written?

written exam tips Jul 13, 2007

Ana,
If your strong language is Spanish I suggest you get a GRE book, from that book study only synonims and reading comprehension. get also a GMAT book and from that use the sentence correction and reading comprehension. Take your time during the test because you have 4 hours more than enough time to complete the test. I completed the test in 2 hours, so you have time to carefully consider the answers.

I hope this helps

For the Written Exam Aug 15, 2007

Hi! Thanks so much to everyone for all the info.. I'm shopping for the GRE/GMAT book for a brush-up. Although Spanish is my native English, I'm stronger in English. What would be the equivalent of the GMAT/GRE book in Spanish? I'm taking the test in Sept., and my Spanish is not as good as I believed it was...

Thanks in advance for any response!!!

- Magda

Patricia, how are you preparing for the oral exam? I'm going for it in November too. I don't think I have a chance at all to pass it, as I haven't had enough time to study so soon after the written, but I'm still studying as much as I can. My goal for now is to not completely embarrass myself and not fail too miserably, hahaha. Hopefully the second time around (March?) I'll be closer to passing it. What I'm doing for now is just practicing simultaneous, consecutive and vocab.

Any help would be appreciated!!

sight translation is an important componenet that you should not underestimate it. you should practice the flow of your delivery and brush up on your vocabularies In general for preparation I beleive the Acebo materials are very good.

Portuguese Exam Nov 13, 2007

This exam sounds like a nightmare.
I recently found this site in my quest to obtain info on the legal translator exam for California. Portuguese is my native and I must say that I am rusty. I've started to practice by only speaking Portuguese with my parents. Can anyone tell me what materials would work best or should I take a class to get a head start?
I currently live in Boston and I will be moving to San Francisco in March. From what I've read in this forum, is it true that there
