Hi!

I don't think you have anything to worry about. As I wrote above, I "swallowed the bait" as far as you did, until I smelled a rat too. But really, you and I have only given this man information -- our address and telephone number -- that can be found very easily doing a Google search of our names. There are loads of sites such as WhitePages.com in which this same information can be had free, not to mention the fact that if one is to open our online CV's, our personal data are there as well. Don't sweat it, just learn the lesson of caution like we all did!:)

Thanks for your response, I should also learn to check the forums snd be more active on these websites. Had I been more familiar with online translation communities' communication on both websites I used, I would have spotted it more easily. But, like you said! a hard lesson to learn!

I think I got him thinking! Nov 27, 2005

Using a phone card, I called Bishop Leslie Opoko at 3:45 Ghana time and informed him that I was an undercover agent working out of Monrovia, Liberia, and that through a series of intense investigations I and a team of colleagues had located his exact position through sophisticated espionage technology. He stuttered and stammered, and began shouting in a foreign language to what sounded like a room full of men, who let out with a cacaphony of excited, apparently frightened voices!! Since I have... He stuttered and stammered, and began shouting in a foreign language to what sounded like a room full of men, who let out with a cacaphony of excited, apparently frightened voices!! Since I have taken part in a short-term UNICEF-related job in 1988 in Ghana, I looked up in my old journals for street names, hotel names, local landmarks, and especially local jargon. As I rattled them off to him, he gasped and hung up on me. I hope this is the last we hear of Bishop Opoko!

Do you think it's the same personality? Nov 27, 2005

Bill, you're a genius!
I thought of everything, how to get him back!! I wanted to take it to the FBI!!!! But I didn't know if they could help, or even take it seriously.
But thanks to Bill here, they gotta know that their scam is utterly rediculus.
Bonita, don't worry about it.... we'll get another break soon enough. I am just glad I didn't rush the advance payment he proposed.... God knows what would have happened.

Opoko is still out there Dec 3, 2005

Well, thanks everyone! You just saved me a trip from Helena to Bozeman (MT). I was expecting the Opoko family to arrive on Monday, but no, I hadn't yet received a check, because "time was not really on our side".

Now I can get back to the translation project I'm working on. What amazes me is that they're still using the same names!
