Note:It could be the way this tablet looks. For example, the figure could be a bas-relief from whose center emerges the figure's face and from where the mouth juts out with downturned lips (with the corners of the mouth turned downward) something like that...this is another possibility but I don't have a diagram or picture of the tablet.

According to another question you asked later, it appears these are high- relief tablets, which makes me think my note may be on the right track insofar as the figure's face emerging from the center and from which protrudes/juts out the mouth with the corners of the mouth turned downward(or "downturned lips," as you said)

Janet, technically speaking a labret or lip plug can be considered a mouthpiece (see below)as it qualifies as "something that is placed at or forming a mouth," which would not make my response wrong per se, just more generic. I have seen "mouthpiece" used in National Geographic magazine articles to signify such items that certain tribes or cultures used in rituals, etc.

Main Entry: mouth·piece
Pronunciation: -"pEs
Function: noun
1 : something placed at or forming a mouth
2 : a part (as of an instrument) that goes in the mouth or to which the mouth is applied
3 a : one that expresses or interprets another's views : SPOKESMAN b slang : a criminal lawyer
