agree  Lancashireman: // Since it now appears the folks at Leuphana are looking for something that sounds sensible in English.

  -> what a mess :-)

neutral  philgoddard: It's not about science at all - the website says the institute studies "das Verhältnis von Kommunikation, Medien und Gesellschaft".

agree  writeaway: it's the only place I saw it as well. wondered if they already had their own English version but no time to look. Hard not to use this......

neutral  Lancashireman: Hi Steffen. Does 'Institut für xxx-kultur' sound OK in German? Because 'Institute for xxx Culture' sounds pretty lame in English.
2 hrs
  -> Yes, I think it does. If this is about Leuphana Lüneburg, however, we'd have to use the established English name anyway.

neutral  Cilian O'Tuama: aha, so it is Leuphana after all - good guess :-) // but if they themselves are not happy with it, I'll change to neutral. /// See one of Asker's notes in discussion box.

Institute of Communication and Media Studies

Explanation:
It would be wrong to translate "Wissenschaft" as "science" here - it means "scholarship", ie studies. And would you really say "I have a degree in media culture"? No, again, I think you'd stay studies, which in English conveniently covers both "Wissenschaft" and "Kultur".

In fact, "communication and media" is something of a tautology in English, because media are by definition forms of communication. However, if you said "institute of media studies", people would think you'd left something out.

neutral  Cilian O'Tuama: following that logic, Computerwissenschaft would not be computer science, oder?// and social science?
21 mins
  -> Computers are a form of technology, so science is a perfectly appropriate word to use. This institute does not teach science, it teaches media studies.

agree  Wendy Streitparth: Definitely more English, but Communication and Media Sciences seems to be widely used in non-GB countries.
