French term

aboutage

French to English Tech/Engineering Forestry / Wood / Timber
This has to do with wood processing: "Toutes les activités de la deuxième et de la troisième transformation du bois étaient concernées : aboutage, agencement, menuiserie, meubles, contreplaqués, lambris, moulures, lamellé collé."

I am not sure what "aboutage" could mean in this context. Any help would be appreciated.

neutral David Sirett : According to GDT, finger jointing is 'aboutage par entures multiples'. I think 'aboutage' on its own covers any sort of lengthening/heading joint.

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to jerryk for initiating this suggestion. I don't think it works in my particular context but there is no reason why some Kudoz should not be awarded. In fact, in my context, I think Jane's "woodworking" is probably what fits best. Thanks to all for participating: you are all a real gift."

lengthening joint / length joint / end-to-end joint

Source = Corkhill, T. The complete dictionary of wood.

splicing

Splicing is the general term for connection of two or more pieces of linear material, commonly wood or rope.

This reply is a bit late for the original post but I was looking to see what "aboutage" is & saw this post. After looking further, ad seeing that the reply posted, "finger jointing" didn't really fit, I understood that aboutage is the generic term, like splicing.
Finger jointing is one technique used to splice wood. Scarf jointing is another. Although we use "jointing" for the different techniques, if it is linear, the result is a splice. A joint is more likely to be at an angle (in furniture making for example).
Example sentence:

how can I splice the 6' posts to make 8' or 9' posts?

Wood aircraft wing spars can be spliced with a scarf joint
