German term

besonders Punkte am Ende des Betreffs sind kritisch!

German to English Law/Patents IT (Information Technology) Email subject lines
Verzichten Sie in der Betreffzeile möglichst auf Interpunktion (besonders Punkte am Ende des Betreffs sind kritisch!) und Sonderzeichen wie „&“, „%“, „/“ oder „\“.

I think I know what they mean, but my question is more "Why"? I am struggling to see why full stops at the end of a subject line would be critical.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): philgoddard

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

"But use a hyphen at the end of it instead of three periods, repeating characters in subjects lines will sometimes get flagged as spam." https://rivervalleyhosting.com/2016/9-super-easy-hacks-for-m...
LisaV20 (asker) Nov 29, 2017:
Yeah, I can see how special characters might trigger spam filters, but ESPECIALLY periods? That is strange.
philgoddard Nov 29, 2017:
I'm glad we asked for context, because your question is answered in the next sentence. It's critical because it can cause problems. Whether or not this is true, it's what the German says.
Mair A-W (PhD) Nov 29, 2017:
weird. I mean, a full stop at the end of a subject line is generally ugly, and can as Johanna says trigger spam filters, but I doubt it would lead to any email client being unable to open the mail.
LisaV20 (asker) Nov 29, 2017:
It's a set of corporate email guidelines for a company. It's a short section entitled "Avoid special characters". There's only two senctences: that one and then "Diese können in einigen Mailsystemen dazu führen, dass E-Mails sich nicht öffnen lassen."
Johanna Timm, PhD Nov 29, 2017:
maybe they are not referring to a full stop/period, but to several points (...), which might, just as special characters, trigger SPAM filters?
philgoddard Nov 29, 2017:
I agree that we need context, but even then we may not be able to answer your question. The meaning is pretty clear.
Mair A-W (PhD) Nov 29, 2017:
what's your context? is it style advice or do they have some technical reason or what?

Especially putting periods at the end of the subject line is problematic

Full stops at the end of a subject line would be problematic. That's the opposite of critical.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Eric Zink : Starting a sentence with "especially" is rarely a good idea.

People don't know the difference between critical and kritisch but "especially" seems the bigger problem to you? Oh dear..
agree philgoddard : Eric does have a point, but this doesn't justify a disagree.

Now, we're on the same page:)
neutral Lancashireman : Problematically, starting a sentence in this way, although not critical as such, may be suboptimal.

(particularly periods/full stops at the end)

There's no need to include des Betreffs, it's already been said.

Placing ellipses at the end of subject lines is especially discouraged

(...) = ellipses

especially ending the "Subject" field with full stops is critical

because it is in no way a clause.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Lancashireman : 'Single quotes' here would be superfluous, but "double quotes" are especially anathema.
