its imprinting as a garden
Peer comment(s):

neutral BrigitteHilgner : "imprinting" halte ich in diesem Zusammenhang für völlig unpassend.

landscaped / landscape design

I think you could simply say something along the lines of "was first landscaped..." or "the landscape design of the park was first introduced"

configuration

Compare with example below:

"In 1871 this former drill field and fairground was graded and planted in its current configuration as a public park."
Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : too "techy" sounding altough not wrong per se

Agree. But that just popped into my head first..
neutral dkfmmuc : Sorry for the neutral comment. My first impression of configuration is an impression of planes or cars customized in a specific *configuration*.

started its life

The way the Grand Garden started its life was as...

The one-word orphan seems to have left an expected 'imprint' on this question.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Robert Dunn : I myself was leaning towards "incarnation" on this one but ultimately decided on "identity"

Identity

Identity can also be a suitable option here.

See example in source link:

"...The new design reinforces the identity of the garden as a welcoming urban park…"
Example sentence:

"..The new design reinforces the ***identity*** of the garden as a welcoming urban park…"
