French term

"perte de visage"

French to English Art/Literary Photography/Imaging (& Graphic Arts) Text on beauty and photography
I am having trouble understanding what this sentence is getting at. It's from a text on beauty, photography and the fashion industry. I keep thinking of the English phrase "loss of face" and don't know whether this is leading me astray!

"La question de la construction de l’identité – et de sa possible perte – est au cœur des travaux. Le souci de l’apparence peut ainsi conduire à la perte du visage : rehausser des traits permet de brouiller les pistes de l’identité. "

Thanks for any suggestions.

loss of [individual] expressiveness / character

I think it is the loss of individual facial characteristics which taken together form the sense of a face lived-in with character.

Duh - sorry, if I'd have properly read the whole sentence I'd have seen that "identity" comes later. All the same, I think "loss of identity" is a pretty good equivalent. Perhaps you could replace "pistes de l'identité" with something like "traces of individuality"?

loss of individuality

The wish for today's interpretation of beauty is leading to doll-like identikit faces, regardless of one's best features. Highlighting these features brings back some originality.
