Is an Arbeitszeugnis for an apprenticeship from the business where someone was apprenticed a work certificate or a letter of reference? I need the term for a certified translation.

In that case it's a letter of reference - though I'm not sure you'd actually write that at the top of the page, because it's obvious what it is. A lot of references begin "to whom it may concern".

The document states that the person did his apprenticeship at the company, worked in XYZ departments and that he worked well and everyone was happy with him.

Final report A 'certificate' does not normally include comments. A 'letter of reference' is generally for someone leaving paid employment.

I only meant that since Zwischenzeugnis was described to me by a German native speaker as "a neutral list of tasks performed, more than a recommendation," I was therefore not 100% sure that "letter of reference" (since that is a recommendation) would be correct for Arbeitzeugnis. But I think the others who discussed this make it clear.

I'm not sure I understood you correctly. Is this what you mean: Zwischenzeugnis = interim performance review, therefore Arbeitszeugnis = letter of reference ? The contents of this particular Arbeitszeugnis is a bit of both: a list of tasks performed as well as positive assessment of the person's abilities.

agree jccantrell : I would probably pick this one. In the USA, you get a letter of reference (to be shown to future possible employers) that usually just states that you worked for Company X from time Y through Z. It does not say anything that could cause legal problems.
