German term

Standzeit

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial Surface treatment (pickling)
Context:

"Um die Standzeit des Beizbades zu erhöhen... ."

Even my TM contains a wealth of translations for Standzeit, for various translators, e.g.:

down-time
dipping time
dwelling time
immobility periods
immobility times
immobilization time
standing time
tool life

obviously, most can be ruled out straight away, but which actually applies here, if any of the above (I suspect none may actually be 100% applicable here, as it sounds to me like it is referring to the life/lifetime of the bath liquid)?

* Sentence or paragraph where the term occurs: See above
* Document type: Plant specifications
* Target audience: Engineers & planners
* Country and dialect (source): Germany (corporate, no dialect.)
* Country and dialect (target): American English (corporate, no dialect.)

Discussion

Bernd Runge Apr 1, 2011:
Inhalt Bei dir geht es eindeutig um die Beize, wie in deinem Beispiel.
David Williams (asker) Apr 1, 2011:
Eben darum auch meine Frage, weil das so uneindeutig ist. Allerdings erschiene es mir hier logischer, wenn es sich um die Beize ginge, vgl.
"The Liquid Sealing Concentrate bath will
seal approximately twice the number of
plates as its No-Nickel counterpart, before it
is depleted."

Bernd Runge Apr 1, 2011:
Das Bad kann sowohl der Inhalt (Beize), das Gerät (equipment) als auch alles zusammen sein.
David Williams (asker) Apr 1, 2011:
Ändert das etwas and den Antworten/Vorschlägen?
David Williams (asker) Mar 31, 2011:
Assuming it is the service life/useful life would it actually mean "To increase the service life of the pickling bath"? I would have thought it would be the service life/useful life of the medium in the bath that would be extended.
David Williams (asker) Mar 31, 2011:
Um die Standzeit des Beizbades zu erhöhen, kann nach dem alkalischen Beizen ein Beizen nach ABC123 vorgeschaltet werden.

Übrigens, Alle Bauteile sind vor dem sauren Beizen nach ABC321 alkalisch zu beizen.
Bernd Runge Mar 31, 2011:
Was wird denn gemacht, um die Standzeit des Bades zu erhöhen?
Paola Gatto Mar 31, 2011:
Standzeit.. ..can be translated through a verbal tense in English, first of all. But it must be clear what it refers to: time of application, operating time in my opinion, fluid processing time.

service life

Why so shy with the context? I can only guess!

Why so shy? NDA.

agree Colin Rowe : Strange, I thought I had already hit "Agree" about 2 hours ago... Subject to confirmation of context.

useful life

Assuming that the reference is to the liquid in the bath, not to the container.

Thank you to you, too!
Peer comment(s):

agree Colin Rowe : Good point. If the liquid itself is meant, then this suggestion fits best.

pickling time

In order to increase the pickling time...
or
For longer pickling times.. For a longer pickling process....

It is about enhancing the pickling effect for de-scaling.

It may be both a bath or circulating fluid (in case of pipelines, for instance)

operating period - another translator's take on this

Überwachung von Beizbädern in der Stahlindustrie
Zum einen führt das zu einer Qualitätssteigerung beim Endprodukt, zum anderen aber auch zu einer längeren Standzeit des Beizbades unter gleichzeitiger Verringerung der laufenden Betriebskosten (geringerer Chemikalieneinsatz notwendig).

Monitoring of pickling baths in the steel industry
On the one hand, this improves the quality of the end product, on the other hand, there results a longer operating period for the pickling bath with simultaneous reduction of its running costs (reduced usage of chemicals).
