English to Indonesian: Book Review: Bambina. A. (2007). Online Social Support: The Interplay of Social Networks and Computer-Mediated Communication.
Source text - English Americans spend increasing amounts of time online—65% of U.S. adults used the
Internet in 2005 (Pew, 2005)—and the charms of gaming, cybershopping, and random
Web surfing are not the only lures there. More and more, we find ourselves networking
socially in online spaces; sites like MySpace and Facebook attract millions of users,
whereas tailored listservs and other more intimate cybercommunities provide a different
level of participation. A recent book by Antonina Bambina examines the ways in which
social networks of the smaller variety intersect with computer-mediated communication
(CMC). Bambina is a research associate at the Center on Organizational Innovation,
Columbia University. As Peter Messeri, of the Mailman School of Public Health at
Columbia, writes in the introduction, the Internet has been hailed for its “profoundly
interactive and democratic quality” (p. xxiii), and Bambina’s in-depth case study allows
readers to gauge the extent to which these promises are realized in at least one cybernetwork.
Her focus on the internal structure of online support groups nicely complements
the plethora of existing research that emphasizes the content of such groups. In addition,
Bambina pushes beyond analysis of group dynamics to examine the flow of communication
among members of a network, with its admittedly more fuzzy boundaries.
