Plus de 100 records de température sont tombés au Vietnam en avril 2024, selon les données officielles du service météorologique local, tandis qu'une vague de chaleur meurtrière frappe l'Asie du Sud et du Sud-Est.
Ces dernières semaines, une chaleur extrême a enveloppé l'Asie, de l'Inde aux Philippines, provoquant des décès par insolation et des fermetures d'écoles. Le changement climatique induit par l'homme entraînera des canicules plus fréquentes, plus longues et plus intenses, avertissent régulièrement les scientifiques.
Le Vietnam a connu trois vagues de forte chaleur en avril, selon les données publiées vendredi par le Centre national de prévision hydrométéorologique, le mercure atteignant 44°C dans deux villes en début de semaine. Ce chiffre est à peine inférieur à la température la plus élevée jamais enregistrée au Vietnam, à savoir 44,2°C le 7 mai 2023.
Au total, 102 stations météorologiques ont enregistré des records en avril, le nord et le centre du Vietnam ayant été les plus touchés par la canicule, avec des températures en moyenne supérieures de 2 à 4°C à celles de la même période l'an dernier. Sept stations ont enregistré mardi des températures dépassant 43°C.

Heatwave hits Vietnam and many South-East Asian Nations setting new records:
More than 100 record temperatures were reported in Vietnam in April 2024, according to official meteorological sources during this blistering heat wave in South and South-East Asia.
During the past weeks, the extreme heat enveloped Asia, from India all the way to the Philippines leading to school closures and even some dying from heat stroke. The scientific community noted that Climate Change due to human activities is the cause more frequent, longer, and more intense heatwaves.
Vietnam is known for three waves of high temperatures in April, according to the National Center of hydrometrology this Friday. The temperatures rose to 44°C in two city at the beginning of the week. For reference, this highest recorded temperature recorded prior to this was 44.2°C from May 7th, 2023.
In total 102 meteorological stations recorded records in April, Northern and Central Vietnam were the most hard-hit by the heatwave, with temperatures averaging 2 to 4°C higher than the same period the year before. Seven station recorded on Tuesday temperatures surpassing 43°C.

Costa Rica is in a cross-roads, which is almost existential. Before the nation sought to capitalise on an international image of a pristine environment. This is now faced by the need to sustain the energy needs of the growing economy. The pressure to allow the exploration of fossil fuels has brought about a national referendum.
The question is not totally new, but the global trends, the international discourse on climate change, and the internal political circumstances are all coming together in this small central american country. Costa Rica has been applauded internationally for its support for the enviornemnt during today’s rising concern around climate change.
