Source text - English Insulin is an important glucoregulatory hormone, and skeletal muscle accounts for the majority of insulin-mediated glucose uptake. Insulin action on skeletal muscle is therefore of prime importance for the regulation of blood glucose concentrations. Insulin binds to the insulin receptor on the muscle sarcolemma and initiates a signalling cascade, mediated via insulin receptor autophosphorylation, phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) activation and Akt and Akt substrate of 160 kDa (AS160)/TBC1D4 phosphorylation. Ultimately, the translocation of the insulin-responsive glucose transporter (GLUT4) and fusion of GLUT4 vesicles with the plasma membrane and T-tubular network enables glucose uptake and the normalization of plasma glucose concentrations. Therefore, insulin action is influenced by the efficacy of insulin and glucose delivery to skeletal muscle fibers, insulin signal transduction and GLUT4 translocation to and fusion with the plasma membrane.

English to Portuguese: Dialectics, Complexity, and the Systemic Approach: Toward a Critical Reconciliation General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Source text - English In this article and elsewhere I refer to Bunge’s approach as “systemism” or “emergentist systemism.” Bunge himself seldom uses the latter term because systemism implies emergentism (cf. Mahner and Bunge 1997, 48-49). He nevertheless agrees with me that the adjective “emergentist” is “a useful psychological or tactical maneuver” (Mario Bunge, personal correspondence, December 22, 2011). I have two reasons for including this adjective: (1) For some analytically oriented social scientists, while they admit that social systems can play an explanatory role in social scientific explanations (as in what Bunge calls the Boudon-Coleman diagram), some of them tend to avoid ascribing any ontological status to these systems. The adjective is therefore a reminder to them that these systems have (explainable but ontologically real) emergent properties or emergent causal powers, which indicate that these systems are not just assumed to be real tentatively in an explanation, but have sui generis ontological status. (2) This adjective is also a reminder that a social entity qualifies as a social system if it possesses emergent properties (e.g., a bonding structure). Therefore, families, clubs, and organizations are perfectly social systems. This is intended as an antidote to the myth prevailing among some social scientists that only such large-scale social entities as states or “the whole society” can be seen as social systems.

Source text - English An increase in skeletal muscle capillary density and mitochondrial content are well-described adaptations to endurance exercise and are responsible for the elevated capacity for fuel and oxygen extraction and total aerobic ATP production in athletes. The intracellular events involved in the stimulation of muscle contraction including Ca2+ release, increased ATP turnover and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), activate signaling pathways that increase the expression of transcription factors [NRF (nuclear respiratory factor)-1, NRF-2, peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), Tfam (transcription factor A, mitochondrial)] and transcriptional co-activators [such as PPARγ co-activator 1α (PGC1α)]. This induces an increase in the expression of genes encoding mitochondrial enzymes and transporter proteins such as GLUT4 and fatty acid translocase (FAT)/CD36. This ultimately results in an increase in the protein content of the majority of enzymes involved in fuel mobilization, transport, and oxidation. The resultant increased capacity for oxidation of plasma- and IMTG- derived FAs seems to play an important role in the improved muscle insulin sensitivity.
English to Portuguese: Materialism, Idealism and the Onto-Epistemological Roots of Geography General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Geography
Source text - English Metaphysics was predominant in Kantian Geography. Far from being in equal level of relevancy, Nature would be subordinated to Man, in a way that his discipline of Anthropology would explain the internal part of Being, while Geography the external one: Nature. Kant’s teleological argument express this subordination, in which Nature’s existence derives and depends on Man. The human being is seen here quite literally as Nature’s true end, existing from and for Mankind. As Space (here separated from Time and History) is, following Kant’s account, an a priori, it should be therefore studied by Reason alone. With Nature per se existing only inside Space, the final cause of every empirical analysis of Nature or Man falls, inevitably, into the aprioristic instruments of thought from Man himself. Indeed, the study of Space by itself is not something seen even as attainable by empirical knowledge. Therefore, in an analogous way to the description of his Idealist method above, knowledge of Reality takes on empirical data as a mere negligible appendix, as Epistemology essence’s simply cannot be obtained by any epistemological means. Rather, its foundation lies in the Idea, the Spirit: human understanding itself.
Translation - Portuguese A Metafísica era predominante na Geografia kantiana.

Experience
Years of experience: 11. Registered at ProZ.com: Aug 2022.
A native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese with 10+ years' experience as an ENG>PT translator, I have a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, a Master's degree in Sociology/Philosophy of Science (both from São Paulo State University- UNESP), and was also a Physics studentat the University of São Paulo (USP). Having worked as an Academic Researcher for more than 6 years - in Brazil and abroad -, the English language was always part of my life. But not only as a science-related tool, or as a means to good grades. No, not at all. My first, deep contact with it began at the age of 9, while sitting on a loud, clunky desktop-computer, completely in awe by the ominous playing rock-MIDI music, terrifying demons, and one cool-looking guy blasting them all with a gun. My dazzled child-mind could only distinguish 4 clear letters, forming an utter alien word for me at the time: DOOM.
Since this day, my newborn obsession with videogames began, exclusively from which I (inadvertently) taught myself English over the years. Just game after game, level after level.
By combining these three passions, 1) Science, 2) Philosophy and 3) Gaming, I decided to use my skills and become an English to Portuguese translator. With 10 years of experience translating, more than 15 gaming (😉), and numerous published peer-reviewed scientific works, I have a large expertise with:
academic texts (scientific papers, projects and textbooks, both from hard and soft sciences);
technical, software and game localization (user's, programmer's, installation, hardware and software guides, UI, dialogue, websites, marketing material, etc.),
subtitling (physics, cosmology and game-related videos).
Being a devoted gamer myself, I've encountered my fair share of poorly done translations, broken dialogs and incomprehensible spelling or grammar, all of which can (and do!) absolutely ruin what could be an otherwise excellent game. Bad localization destroys both the player's experience and the company's reputation, wrecking sales revenue and player retention.
This sad awareness inspired me years ago to get things done by myself. My half a decade formation in Social Sciences truly shines here, as it gave me deep cultural, historical, and political knowledge of Brazil, tremendous valuable assets when working on any game localization project: specially in the Culturalization part of it. Besides, as my love for games has (really) no prejudice, ranging from strategy, MMOs, mobile, survival to indie and retro titles, true immersion and terminology fidelity is guaranteed on any given job, passion and skill combined.
Apart from numerous awards and grants from funding agencies - all by academic merit -, I'm also TOEFL certified and verified, with the highest proficiency possible, test score 644 of 677.
