Bio

A native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese with 10+ years' experience as an ENG>PT translator, I have a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, a Master's degree in Sociology/Philosophy of Science (both from São Paulo State University- UNESP), and was also a Physics student at the University of São Paulo (USP). Having worked as an Academic Researcher for more than 6 years - in Brazil and abroad -, the English language was always part of my life. But not only as a science-related tool, or as a means to good grades. No, not at all. My first, deep contact with it began at the age of 9, while sitting on a loud, clunky desktop-computer, completely in awe by the ominous playing rock-MIDI music, terrifying demons, and one cool-looking guy blasting them all with a gun. My dazzled child-mind could only distinguish 4 clear letters, forming an utter alien word for me at the time: DOOM.

Since this day, my newborn obsession with videogames began, exclusively from which I (inadvertently) taught myself English over the years. Just game after game, level after level.

By combining these three passions, 1) Science, 2) Philosophy and 3) Gaming, I decided to use my skills and become an English to Portuguese translator.
With 10 years of experience translating, more than 15 gaming (😉), and numerous published peer-reviewed scientific works, I have a large expertise with:

  • academic texts (scientific papers, projects and textbooks, both from hard and soft sciences);
  • technical, software and game localization (user's, programmer's, installation, hardware and software guides, UI, dialogue, websites, marketing material, etc.),
  • legal documents (contracts, license agreements, software, hardware, maintenance and services licenses);
  • subtitling (physics, cosmology and game-related videos).

Being a devoted gamer myself, I've encountered my fair share of poorly done translations, broken dialogs and incomprehensible spelling or grammar, all of which can (and do!) absolutely ruin what could be an otherwise excellent game. Bad localization destroys both the player's experience and the company's reputation, wrecking sales revenue and player retention

This sad awareness inspired me years ago to get things done by myself. My half a decade formation in Social Sciences truly shines here, as it gave me deep cultural, historical, and political knowledge of Brazil, tremendous valuable assets when working on any game localization project: specially in the Culturalization part of it. Besides, as my love for games has (really) no prejudice, ranging from strategy, MMOs, mobile, survival to indie and retro titles, true immersion and terminology fidelity is guaranteed on any given job, passion and skill combined.

Apart from numerous awards and grants from funding agencies - all by academic merit -, I'm also TOEFL certified and verified, with the highest proficiency possible, test score 644 of 677.

CAT Tools I'm experienced with: MemoQ, Wordfast Pro, OmegaT, Memsource.
