Russian term
туристы-одиночники
Russian to English
Other
Tourism & Travel
Меня поразило большое количество туристов-одиночников. На велосипедах, мотоциклах, каноэ.
Is there a special term or would just 'solitary tourists' be OK?

: I was thinking of this too, but I'm still in the dark when it comes to these double nouns in Russian and the meaning that lies behind them // why aren't they одиноковые туристы? Does that sound funny in Russian?

Thanks, Henry! Re double nouns - there is no hidden meaning, take it at face value as 2 "parameters". /It does not exist in Russian. Adj. would be одинокий, wrong register here.

: Except I'd replace "tourists" with "travellers". The English "tourist" doesn't share all meanings with "турист"

lone tourists
Whereas "individual tourists" is a good option, it seems to me that it is mostly used by Russian and Hindu speakers. At the same time "lone tourists" have less Google results, but they are found mostly in native English speaking texts...

OK, but can't individual tourists travel, for instance, in pairs? |

Jennifer Guernsey
: Single can mean unmarried as well as traveling solo.//Your Hyatt citation, e.g., implies unmarried to me (in contrast w/"families"). "Single" isn't wrong, but "solo" is unambiguous.

Well, Jennifer, rather the 2nd than the 1st meaning is implied in the context, isn't it? :) See also http://www.answers.com/single&r=67
