Меня поразило большое количество туристов-одиночников. На велосипедах, мотоциклах, каноэ.

Is there a special term or would just 'solitary tourists' be OK?

Anr. 'yes' - individual tourists can travel in pairs and in flocks :-)) but in terms of hotel and ticket booking they do not have any gropu discounts etc. So formally, business-speaking it's individual tourists 100%; for me 'solo' it's kind of 'nicey word

Sorry, unable to read the whole thread - it's too long. But in your case it's said in opposition to the tourist groups. So i would use 'individual tourists' without any doubt.

To Arkadi: OK, but can't individual tourists travel, for instance, in pairs? In the context, however, each travels alone.

To Arkadi - да, я не вас решительно не правильно понял, но все-таки мне не понятно, почему здесь автор не использует прилагательное, а если он выбирает существительное, должно быть больше смысла на мой иностранный взгляд.

Henry, I believe “муж-офицер” is ‘a husband who is an officer’. This is just a short way to put it. As for ‘туристы-одиночники’, they are ‘tourists who travel alone’. I guess ‘одиночник’ here is rather a slangy term.

To Arkadi - ну тогда они - туристи и одиночники, или я неправильно вас понял. Ваш ответ в моих ушах звучит как отдельные туристы, совсем нормально, только в этом случае они туристи с каким атрибутом. Я здесь отценивать не могу, потому что не вижу картину

In your case, this is critical: Are they "loners and tourists" or just "lonely tourists". Since I'm not Russian and can't voice my difficulty very clearly, I've never been able to figure out how to understand these double nouns in literature...

In my example, it is understandable to me since I don't know any proper adjectives for husband or officer, but the question remains: Is the author describing the person as "husband and officer" or "officer husband", and does order stress the last word?

Thanks, Henry! Re double nouns - there is no hidden meaning, take it at face value as 2 "parameters". /It does not exist in Russian. Adj. would be одинокий, wrong register here.

lone tourists

Whereas "individual tourists" is a good option, it seems to me that it is mostly used by Russian and Hindu speakers. At the same time "lone tourists" have less Google results, but they are found mostly in native English speaking texts...
