Russian to English

Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
I'm looking for an English equivalent. It'd be nice if someone found an already-existing English idiom -- I couldn't think of one -- but snappy nonce translations are also welcome. (Of course, I already know what the translation means, so no explanatory translation is needed.)

It's that (pierce of) paper that makes the difference
It's that (pierce of) paper that makes the difference (in real life)
this phrasing could apply to all sorts of situations, I suppose :))
college degrees come to mind first
second would be the "official status"granted
third - in privacy, behind a closed door
but i've heard it used even about a marriage
I admit, it's not as poetical

Yes, of course, thank you Misha, how careless of me!
The line should read:
"Ït's that (piece of) paper that makes the difference in/between..."

The Misha
: Naturally, there is no such saying in English, but to me this sounds like the most natural way of rendering the idea in English. Just correct that "pierce" thingy, that's something totally different:)

Without a [diploma] you won't succeed; a [diploma's] what a real person needs!
Kind of blah, but I can't think of a ready-made saying. If it's not a diploma or is supposed to be more general, then substitute "piece of paper" and "paper" for the parts in brackets.
If, however, it's definitely a diploma and were, by any chance, intended to be more sarcastic, then the possibilities for fun would be many. So here are some likely irrelevant flights of fancy:
Without a diploma you're cooked; with a diploma - good luck!
(If you were Victoria Nuland you would say that with a much better rhyme in place of "cooked".)
Or this way:
Without a diploma you're at a dead end; with a diploma you're at a debt end!

Thanks, Maria. But most of the native Russian-speakers here say that it's any official paper, not only a diploma. Still, if the asker supplied more context we might have a more certain idea.

without a piece of paper you are nobody--you need paper to become somebody
or you need paper or a piece of paper

The Misha
: This is the most godawful, literal translation among the grammatically correct ones offered (you did beat the poop guy, I gotta give you that). Also, it's not "paper," it's at the very least "a paper".

You won't go far in life without documents but if you have the 'right' documents you can make a name for yourself.
make a name for yourself = succeed in life, be a real success
'right' documents in single quotations because some elusive, hard-to-get documents that you need to jump through hoops to get were deemed more important and status-worthy

The Misha
: This is an absolutely impeccable bureaucratic way of putting it which totally misses the flamboyance of the original. I am sure they'd be happy to include it in the Russian Army's service regulations or any other such worthy document.

You'll come as a winner out of a situation, if you've got papers at hand for every occasion
Chances are you would be out of trouble, if you've got papers at hand to make your point instead of soap bubbles.

Your papers are official documents, for example your passport or identity card, which prove who you are or which give you official permission to do something. It's papers that matter if you face a situation when nobody cares about your frustration.

although methinks Alexandra is right!
In that case maybe: "You need a paper in the hand, or else, like a bug, you'll be crawling in the sand."
Got no paper, you’re doodoo, got a paper, you’re a man.
