p.s. I think the point here is "inner peace" or peace in general, not rest.

Rachel Douglas
: Yes, I answered before realizing, from the other question, that the context was yoga. So in that context, I think "Inner peace must be earned" is right.

You have to earn your rest
You have to earn your rest.
Rest must be well-earned. (More stilted, but might fit some contexts.)

You have to work hard for your peace of mind.
You have to practice/practise a lot for a harmony of body, mind and spirit. Remember: "I'd give you everything I've got for a little peace of mind".

Discussion
Исходник: It’s doubtful that we, the people of society, need to enter it regularly.
I’d like to add that the state of consciousness with Onlooker is called “sattva” (light). The state with an active “I” is “rajas” (obscurity of mind). And the state devoid of both is “tamas” (somnolence, laziness or inertia). Curiously enough Indian philosophy doesn’t negate “rajas” and “tamas”, but constantly repeat their unbreakable unity. Hence the following proverbs: a lotus grows in the mud, society is the best teacher, and peace must be earned and so on. http://realyoga.ru/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=151955
