English term

black eye

English to Portuguese Marketing Advertising / Public Relations
After learning of the theft and informing the Federal Bureau of Investigation, McDonald’s immediately introduced a different promotional game run by another promotional agency so as to make good on its promise to customers and restore its credibility. Apparently, the Simon Marketing employee who ripped off McDonald’s had for several years been stealing winning game tickets from other games. A spokesperson for the Promotion Marketing Association, the trade association for the industry, characterized this debacle as a “black eye” for the promotion marketing industry.
=============
black eye = um duro golpe?
uma vergonha para o setor de marketing de promoções?

I think you made a really good choice Teresa :-)

A resposta da Marlene sugeriu-me o seguinte: [...] descreveu este desastre como um vergonhoso olho negro para a [...] It would be a way of combining the double meaning of the original... HTH

Maybe some else will come up with something good :-)
Paula Vaz-Carreiro Jan 3, 2008:
Teresa, at the moment I can't think of a good way to translate the WHOLE meaning. Like Maria thinks, there is a double meaning: black eye = olho negro (em PT-PT talvez seja diferent no BR) AND black eye also means A dishonored reputation; a bad name.

Mancha negra

No Babyon as definições são as seguintes:

black eye
soco no olho

Babylon English-English

black eye
discoloration of the skin around the eye, bruised eye (resulting from a blow, etc.)

Wikipedia English:

Black eye
A black eye is bruising around the eye commonly due to an injury to the face rather than an eye injury. The name is given due to the color of bruising. Most black eye injuries are minor and will heal themselves in about one week. Trauma near the eyebrow or places not directly on the eye may make the eyelid go black.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Paula Vaz-Carreiro : You are right about the double meaning (see note to asker) but the problem is whether putting just that will convey all the meaning. Well done anyway.

Obrigada, Paula.
agree Paul Dixon : Yes, definitely.
