Commiserations to colleagues in the Reading area who are suffering from yesterday's white-out. Having spent all Thursday night in my car in a snowdrift and howling blizzard in deepest Hertfordshire, you have my sympathy. Let's hope it's blown itself out by the New Year!

Off-topic - Snowbound Dec 22, 2009

Amazing how little snow can bring the country to its knees! Russell, that sounds like a nightmare, hope you've recovered from the ordeal OK. A friend of mine took 9 hours to get back from Reading last night (it's normally a half-hour drive) and has vowed not to leave the house until all the snow has gone. I can't say I blame her. It may be pretty but it's not that convenient!

Off-topic - Basingstoke Dec 22, 2009

Hi all,
Yesterday I missed the last train home to Andover and had to spend the night at a pub in Basingstoke. The landlady was nice enough to keep the pub open all night. Roads were a nightmare... I never thought snow could be such great trouble!
Looking forward to our meeting on January 3.
Cheers!

Update Dec 23, 2009

Let's hope things will get back to normal pretty soon - it's still chaotic in some places! I've just checked with the Oakford and they're open on Sunday 3rd. Astrid, I guess it's up to you to decide whether your baby boy doesn't mind being around so many people in a pub with music playing in the background. The atmosphere is relaxed though, and not too noisy. I'm sure no-one would mind and it'd be nice to meet you. Have a great Christmas everyone!

Name labels Dec 23, 2009

When I last organised a Powwow, it was suggested that name badges or labels were worn and I think it proved useful.
So, in the hope that the number of people turning up is enough to stretch my powers of memory - which are not what they were - I have prepared some more labels this time.
If anyone who uses an incomplete name, pseudonym (or very long name) on the site would prefer a label with their real name (or a shorter name), please

If anyone who uses an incomplete name, pseudonym (or very long name) on the site would prefer a label with their real name (or a shorter name), please e-mail me through my profile or at [email protected] - even if you're not certain you can make it yet. The same applies for anyone who hasn't listed their language pair(s) on their profile.
Thanks.

Nadine has kindly reserved a table, provisionally for 10 people, from 12:30 onwards.
At present 14 people have said they may attend but so far only 6 of these are confirmed as definite. While precise numbers are probably not essential, if it is possible for everyone to confirm attendance or otherwise by Thursday morning (here on the Powwow page, by ProZ.com mail or by replying to my separate e-mail), this would be very helpful. If that isn’t possible, it would still be useful to know whether you are a “hopeful” or “doubtful”.

If your ProZ.com identity has not already been verified, both Laureana and I are authorised to verify it. The details of the programme are here:
http://www.proz.com/faq/761#761. If you would like to take advantage of this, please bring a photo ID (passport or new style driving licence) and refer to the detailed requirements in paragraph 9.5:
http://www.proz.com/faq/2419#2419.

I imagine that most people will just want an informal gathering on this occasion but, if anyone is keen to have a short round-table discussion on a particular subject – or even wants to volunteer a (very brief) presentation - please say so and we can ask whether everyone is interested.

I would expect the Powwow to end by about 4:00 pm but that is entirely up to those attending. I understand that food is available but that there is no obligation to order any - please correct me if this is wrong Nadine.

Thanks, Dec 27, 2009

Russell, for your efforts.

At the moment I think I'd be down as a doubtful, although I think I may also be authorised to verify identities (or native-speaker prowess for the Certified Pro scheme).

Thanks for organising and I will see nearer the time whether this is a goer or not.

Best regards to everyone and a Happy Christmas!

Food Dec 27, 2009

Thanks Russell for finalising the arrangements. As far as food is concerned, we can simply order off the menu or ask the pub to lay on a buffet for us. Unless anyone objects, I think we should go for the first option to be more flexible - it still doesn't mean we have to order food, but we can if we want.

Also, I booked the table under the name "ProZ powwow", so in case you're lost, just ask at the bar.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Nadine

Native language Dec 27, 2009

I was going to ask you about native language credentials in my previous post - but I realised that since I'm not yet a member of ProZ I don't have this function in my profile - I'll probably ask you about it at the powwow instead.

Thanks Jan 11, 2010

I am now back home and would like to thank you all once again for, as Russel put it, braving the cold to attend our powwow.
It was great to meet each and every one of you.
Best of luck for 2010.
Laureana
