2.HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Appearance and Odor: Yellow fabric material with no characteristic odor. Under certain conditions, product may have faint ammonia-like odor.
Emergency Overview: Inhalation of excessive amounts of dust from the product may cause mechanical irritation to the respiratory tract. Dermal contact may cause mechanical irritation.
POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS
Inhalation: Inhalation of airborne dusts may cause mechanical irritation of the upper respiratory tract.
Eye Contact: Exposure to dust from this product can produce a drying sensation and mechanical irritation of the eyes.
Skin Contact: Skin contact with dust from this product can produce a drying sensation and mechanical irritation of the skin and mucous membranes.
Ingestion: This material is not intended to be ingested (eaten). If ingested in large quantity, the material may produce mechanical irritation and blockage
Acute Health Hazards: Dust from this product is a physical irritant, and may cause temporary irritation or scratchiness of the throat and / or itching and redness of the eyes and skin.
Chronic Health Hazards: Titanium dioxide has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a “possible carcinogen to human” (Group 2B). See Section 11 for a full discussion.
Some studies of long term amorphous silica dust exposures indicate a potential for decreased lung function. In surveyed studies, this effect is characterized as compounded by smoking. Solar cells (also known as photovoltaic cells, or PVs) that convert sunlight directly into electricity are one of the most revolutionary new energy technologies to be commercialized in recent decades. These devices are most often composed of crystalline silicon chips similar to those found in computers. They are adaptable to a remarkable range of uses, from handheld electronic devices to mountaintop weather stations, large desert power plants, and America’s rooftops. Solar cells can produce electricity almost anywhere—the solar resource in Maine, for example, is about 75 percent of that in Los Angeles. Annual global production of solar cells has increased six-fold since 2000, exceeding 1,700 MW in 2005, and the industry plans to continue its dramatic expansion. Global grid-connected PV capacity increased 55 percent in 2005, to 3.1 gigawatts, making it the world’s fastest growing source of power.
Concentrating Solar Technologies
Parabolic trough technologies track the sun with rows of mirrors that heat a fluid. The fluid then produces steam to drive a turbine.
Central receiver (tower) systems use large mirrors to direct the sun to a central tower, where fluid is heated to produce steam that drives a turbine. Parabolic trough and tower systems can provide largescale, bulk power with heat storage (in the form of molten salt, or in hybrid systems that derive a small share of their power from natural gas).
Dish systems consist of a reflecting parabolic dish mirror system that concentrates sunlight onto a small area, where a receiver is heated and drives a small thermal engine.
Concentrating photovoltaic systems (CPV) use moving lenses or mirrors to track the sun and focus its light on high-efficiency silicon or multi-junction solar cells; they are potentially a lower-cost approach to utility-scale PV power. Dish and CPV systems are well suited for decentralized generation that is located close to the site of demand, or can be installed in large groups for central station power.

Le tecnologie a concentrazione solare (CPV) fanno uso di lenti mobili o specchi che attirano i raggi e li incanalano su pannelli solari multigiunzione o con silicone ad alta efficienza; si tratta di una soluzione potenzialmente meno dispendiosa per ottenere energia solare su scala pubblica.
