Is it possible to split the Kudoz between more than one answer?

Hi!
I was wondering if somebody could explain the Kudoz grading system. I have been just giving four points to the selected answer. However, sometimes some people really contribute even if it's not the selected answer and seems fair to give them points. Other time I end up resolving the term with contributions from more than one answer, etc. So how does the grading system really work?
Cheers
Ed

No, you may only select one "most helpful" answer. Dividing points among answerers has been considered previously, but discarded based on the relatively little benefit which would be gained, and the difficulty of implementing administration of points and such problems as dividing four points among three answers. A useful guideline for cases where you cannot decide on an answer is to choose the one which helped you most. In the case of two or more equally helpful answers, you may choose the first (things tend to even out for answerers over time.)

Cheers,
Andrea

It is not always easy to choose one answer as the best Jun 25, 2009

... but the points can only go to one.

Usually there is one that is clearly most helpful. If there are two almost identical answers, it is suggested that you give points to the first.

I always add a general note to thank the others, and you can add individual ones to each answer if you have time and want to add a comment. These must be linguistic and not personal, however. "Thanks, I liked your answer too" is OK, but anything like "You always have good ideas" is getting

"Thanks, I liked your answer too" is OK, but anything like "You always have good ideas" is getting risky! Keep the focus on the answer, not the person.

People who participate in KudoZ know that is how it works, and while some are fiercely interested in points, many are not really worried. It is a challenge, and a chance to learn something new, which is more important than points.

Best of luck!

Thank you very much for your posts. I scanned through the Kudoz FAQ and I didn't see the answer I was looking for. Now it's all clear!

KudoZ Rules: No '2.16', why is that? Jun 29, 2009

@ site staff/peers
You know, for some reason I just do not have a 2.16. My list goes from 2.1 to 2.10. Am I doing something wrong?

No, you may only select one "most helpful" answer. I think that it could be really useful for the asker to have the possibility to award points to whoever deserves them.

Instead of selecting the most helpful answer, an asker could just give up to four points to all the users who answered the question: 0 (not helpful), 1 (slightly helpful) ... 4 (most helpful).

It may well be that there was one and only one good answer, but sometime it happens that there are several good answers and the asker uses them all to find the proper solution. It would be good if s/he could give 4 points to the most helpful and maybe 1 to a less helpful answerer which has helped s/he to pick the word s/he was looking for.

Sometimes it also happens that 2-3 users suggest the same answer at the same time (i.e. today it happened for an English > Italian question) and the asker doesn't know how to choose the "most helpful" answer. Then, it would be indeed useful to award a few points to all those who actually helped.

Regarding Alessandro's point about people sending the same- or very similar answer: this can be conveniently solved if it turns out in retrospect that the word translated (a German term in this case) was not that complex after all. In such cases I just award1/2 points and no glossary entry.

owever, I would have preferred to have split points, however low. Surely regarding this one aspect Proz could be more flexible?

It has been suggested before and will probably be suggested again and again in the future. In fact, I have expressed a very similar opinion myself not once, but twice (the second time in Russian-language forum). Not everybody agreed, but quite a number of people supported me.

I'm convinced that there can be a situation where not one, but two, three or even more answers are equally helpful. And it is my opinion that this situation happens rather frequently. So I fully support Alessandra's proposal.

Edward, this is not hte first time a Proz user proposes that. I support your idea. Indeed, the constant pop-up of this proposal shows us, again, the need to implement it.

Yes, Jonathan, and every time you decide in retrospect that one of your questions was "not that complex after all" and award one point, you have lowered the answerer's reliability ratio. He or she will be reluctant to answer any of your questions in the future.

I also think that points should be allowed to be given to more than one answer BUT my opinion is that each question would be worth 4 points and no more. So, if you want to split 2 and 2 to 2 answers, fine, but being able to award 4 points to more than one answer would be unfair, given that the level of "education" about how KudoZ works varies too much among askers. You could have a question that had distributed 40 points away while most would distribute 4.

Lateral thinking Apr 8, 2010

Here's an idea: Several people point out that it's difficult to share 4 points among several answerers. The following occurs to me:
not four (4) but twelve (12) points should be available, for the asker to share how s/he likes among the contributors. Why 12? because it's the smallest number that can be equally shared among useful numbers of people: 12 can be shared equally among 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 people.

Since 12 is 3 times the existing 4, changing to 12 would need
  • multiply everybody's existing KudoZ points by 3
  • everywhere where KudoZ points are awarded or deducted, multiply those numbers by 3 also.
That's my "lateral thinking" contribution to this discussion.
