"Están definidas por grandes llanuras estructurales formadas por rocas cristalinas que se han hundido y rellenado posteriormente de materiales blandos, muchas veces cubiertos por capas de rocas más duras. Comportan formaciones sobretodo detríticas con conglomerados y areniscas, arcillas y esquistos en alternancia.

Los relieves se organizan en función del dispositivo estructural, pueden distinguirse las regiones con estratos horizontales y aquellas en que los estratos han basculado o se han ondulado.

Las series horizontales protegidas por una capa superior resistente origina mesas o páramos que son desmantelados por las redes fluviales dando lugar a ***cerros testigos*** o antecerros."
