This book is about geotechnical engineering more than geology. Thanks Beatriz and Jim for the reference!

rocky terrain

Explanation:
if we are talking about geology in my opinion the expression rocky terrain is more appropriate. Rocky ground doesn't give the feeling that the translation requires. But that's my opinion.

Example sentence(s):
  • The geologist was picking his way through rocky terrain.

disagree  James (Jim) Davis: Definitely "ground". Geologists or geotechnical geologists at least talk of ground not terrain in this sense as in underground, groundwater. Ground consists of rocks and soils. "rocky terrain" is for gardners and hikers.

Kenneth is correct, in a geological context "terrain" is much more appropirate than "ground".

  -> sorry Jim but having worked as a geologist, having been educated as a geologist and being married to a geologist, I will have to respectfully disagree. it's enough to do a quick search of journal articles to see this.
