Der Kinder-Präventionskurs in Verbindung mit Elterntraining bildete die Experimentalgruppe....

My question is on the verb. I had "formed," but in English, PEOPLE form an experimental or control group, not PROGRAMS or METHODS. Should I rewrite this so that people are the subject, or is there a way to say this that sticks closer to the original?

Subjects/people who attended ...
Explanation:
the X course and received Y training formed the experimental group.

You don't give much context - I assume there is a control group referred to later, as there would be in any standard experimental design.

(or: The X course combined with Y formed the experimental condition)
