German term

% mas

German to English Science Medical: Pharmaceuticals units
This term appears as a unit, for example "Alkoholgehalt (% mas)" in a table or in text "25 Liter Reinigungsalkohol (62 % mas)". The document is a process validation report for a pharmaceutical process involving the filling of liquids.

Does this simply mean % by mass (% by weight) or is there a more specific explanation?

The document comes from an Austrian company in case this is relevant.
Proposed translations (English)
5 percent or % by mass

Thanks for your help. I felt it should be that but couldn't find anything to be completely sure that % mas actually did mean % mass.

You already have the answer... % by mass, or (% mass) is the answer.
Anne-Katrin Grube Jan 24, 2011:
% mas (Gewichtshundertteil) = Masseeinheit as opposed to % vol = Volumeneinheit; maybe this helps (a bit)

percent or % by mass

That's the standard usage by chemists.

You will see many other renderings of this on Google... but this is the standard, even though it may be difficult to find it on Google.
I could have suggested other things (e.g. percentage by mass), but I do not want to propagate a non-standard term.
