English term or phrase: high local fields
An initial selective modification of the metal surface at sub- wavelength spatial resolution can be carried out using various techniques, including the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM). A platinum-coated AFM tip can be used to catalyse hydrogenation of terminal azides to amino groups that are amenable to further derivatisation. The enzymes can then be placed into "hot spots" where *high local fields* exist in regions where optical modes are localised.
