Italian to English translations [PRO] Medical - Medical: Cardiology / Patient notes (drug trial patient)
Italian term or phrase:falda di pneumotorace
This is more than just pneumothorax, which is PNX. This is a cardiology-related document relating to PM implantation.
Explanation: If the examination is an RX you can use pneumothorax opacities, otherwise collection

Thoracic postoperative complications are difficult to diagnose on supine chest X-rays, with pneumothoraxes accompanied by underlying atelectasis presenting as non-specific opacities due to the superposition of the two entities having opposed radiographic characteristics, with one causing lucency and the other opacity
The supine chest X-ray was performed, revealing a superior right quadrant chest opacity.
The radiologist requested a follow-up computed tomography (CT) within the hour to elucidate the origin of the respiratory distress. The CT scan revealed a right sided pneumothorax (white star) with air rising anteriorly and caudally

Opacity is a term used to describe any area that preferentially absorbs and therefore appears more opaque than the surrounding area on a radiograph. It does not indicate the size or pathological structure of the abnormality

Chest radiographs are the cornerstone for diagnosing pneumothorax. The radiographs may be completely unremarkable or may demonstrate an opacity surrounding the intrathoracic portion of the chest tube, representing surrounding hematoma.

Pneumothorax opacities can be identified by radiography.
In other words, opacity refers to any area that appears white on a chest radiograph when it should be darker. On both CT and chest radiographs, normal lungs appear dark compared to surrounding tissues because air has a relatively lower density
Thank you to everybody who contributed to this discussion. It was difficult to choose a translation in view of the disagreement between specialists in the field, but in view of the fact that one of the basic meanings of "falda" is "layer, stratum, collection, groundwater", not "rim", and I found hits for "collection" in this context online, this is what I chose, as it seemed logical to me. Apologies if this offends anybody, but the client needed the translation and it wasn't the most significant finding in the report anyway.
Punto
Falda è giustamente tradotto come rim e siamo d'accordo.
Opaque (opacity) – an area that absorbs or scatters a large amount of x-ray beams before they reach the detector. Appear whiter on an x-ray Lucent (lucency) – an area where x-ray beams pass through without interference to reach the detector. Appear blacker on an x-ray
In other words, opacity refers to any area that appears white on a chest radiograph when it should be darker. On both CT and chest radiographs, normal lungs appear dark compared to surrounding tissues because air has a relatively lower density. When there is a replacement of air with another substance in the lung, such as fluid or fibrosis, it causes an increase in the density of that area. As a result, the tissue appears lighter or gray in a chest radiograph. The term “lung opacity” on a chest radiograph refers to areas in the normally dark-appearing lung that appear denser, hazy, or cloudy [2]. Therefore, areas of opacity are areas that are gray but should be darker [3, 4].
"a lucency (air=black/dark) not an opacity as also Mattia's references show. It's air so it's dark not white. Plus the normal vascular markings (trama vascolare) are not visible."

Chest X-ray (Figures 2 and 3): visible rim between the lung margin and chest wall, with an absence of lung markings. The size of the pneumothorax is measured at the level of the hilum: >2cm is classified as a “large” pneumothorax.17 CT chest (Figure 4): may be used to identify small pneumothoraces missed by chest X-ray. Also, can help to identify the cause of the pneumothorax (can show air bulla or emphysematous changes). https://geekymedics.com/pneumothorax/

falda is usually a "collection" (blood, air, fluid) Pneumothorax is defined as an air collection inside the pleural space I'm not sure that a " falda di pneumotorace" is any different from a pneumotorace. A few Italian authors have it as "pneumothorax air collection", which sounds like a repetition
