Cuando la rosca de tornillo se apoya solamente en la segunda cortical se le conoce como tornillo de intervalo.
La rosca del tornilo no se apoya en la primera cortical,bien porque el eje del tornillo no tiene rosca o porque el agujero de la broca en la primera cortical es igual o más grande que el diámetro externo del tornillo. Por lo tanto, la primera cortical tendrá que brocarse más,con el fin de crear un agujero "de deslizamiento".

Esto asegurará que la rosca del tornillo solamente se apoyará en la segunda cortical o agujero roscado.

Al insertar y apretar este tipo de tornillo,los dos fragmentos del hueso se comprimen.

For a screw that crosses a fracture plane to produce interfragmentary compression, the thread must purchase in only the far cortex. A gliding hole is drill in the near cortex.
Special partially threaded cortical, or shaft-screws are also available for this purpose. The drilling procedure is the same, except in softer bone, no gliding hole needs to be drilled.
If the screw that crosses the fracture plane purchases in both cortices, it cannot produce interfragmentary compression.
