English term

arch realist

Non-PRO English Other Psychology sentence
" In a letter to Louise Colet, Gustave Flaubert spoke of aspiring to write a book about nothing, a book that would be held together by the mutual tensions of its component parts rather than by its correspondence to any real world. He never wrote such a book : it was much too hard, and anyhow no one would have read it. But it is telling that a writer who is thought of as an arch realist should have had such a low opinion of reality."

What does "arch realist" mean?

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

preeminent or extreme realist

"Arch-" is a prefix that can imply "main" or "leading", or "preeminent". That is, an arch-realist (normally hyphenated like this) means a writer who is a preeminent exponent of realism, who is the most or one of the most realist writers. That is how Flaubert is usually seen: a writer who is singularly or exceptionally, even supremely, realist in his work.

"Realist" is a problematic term in literature, but put simply, it means a writer of narrative fiction who reflects reality faithfully in his/her works.

Thanks, Phil. Yes, good reference. It's not pejorative, exactly, but it does have a suggestion of "out-and-out".

quintessential realist

"Arch-
"A combining form that represents the outcome of archi- in words borrowed through Latin from Greek in the Old English period; it subsequently became a productive form added to nouns of any origin, which thus denote individuals or institutions directing or having authority over others of their class ( archbishop; archdiocese; archpriest). More recently, arch- 1, has developed the senses “principal” ( archenemy; archrival) or “prototypical” and thus exemplary or extreme ( archconservative); nouns so formed are almost always pejorative."

In other words, it means "that most extreme of realists". I don't think the sense is particularly pejorative here.
