German term

Rangier- und Schaltarbeiten

German to English Tech/Engineering Telecom(munications)
"Für Rangier- und Schaltarbeiten werden Gf- Verbindungskabel (Gf- Vbk) und Gf- Schaltadern verwendet."

This is a term of a contract for maintenance of telecommunications fibre optic cabling. My first guess is "routing and switching work" but I'm not at all confident I'm right.

I'd be grateful for any help!

Discussion

Bernd Runge May 3, 2011:
Jaime Hyland (asker) May 3, 2011:
@ Wulf-Dieter The document is about contractual conditions for installation of fibre-optic cabling. The context tells me it deals with all sorts of installations and has no particular reference to railway transport, or indeed any other form of transport. Rangier and Schaltarbeiten seem to be purely telcom terms in this context, though they almost certainly have roots in rail transportation.

Thank you for your help!

humping and switching

this is what happens on a hump yard (AE)/marshalling yard (BE)

The issue however is, what are these cables for - where are they installed for what purpose.
Are they installted for the signal communication for humping and switching in a hump yard?
Your context only gives a slight clue and that is 'Arbeiten' and Rangierarbeiten at first thought has to do with freight trains.
However, having said that I just found "strap v , to rearrange wires, to change strappings, jumper v" and "jumpering n , strapping " in my 'Brandstette' library i.e. 'Kucera' and 'Lorenz' both entries in conjunction with electrical engineering and switching. So then have a close look at the context or ask your client to clatify.

So depending on context it also could be:

jumpering and strapping work

Then it must be

jumpering and strapping work
Note from asker:
Thanks, Wulf-Dieter, I was tempted by something like this myself but the document is about fibre optic cables.

disagree Ronald van Riet : this is computer cabiling, not trains...

patch cable work

this is about work involving patch cables, both for routing and switching. rather than enumerating the purposes (routing and switching), why not use the shorter term for the type of cables used in both?
