Discussion

Chris Walker (asker) Nov 12, 2009:
Indeed! Thank you for this additional remark. I think in the context I was translating it was clear (also because I used "determinant" as an adjective, not a noun) - nonetheless this is a very valid point and I have made note of the alternatives as well. Cheers!
Textpertise Nov 12, 2009:
Warning to Chris about "determinant" Sorry I didn't see this answer before. The word "determinant" as you may be aware has a specific meaning in mathematics. It is a quantity obtained by the addition of products of the elements of a square matrix according to a given rule. I would avoid using it in a document with a mathematical basis. Not concerned about points. Only about correct usage.

determinant [determines/is crucial/is relevant (to)]

Merriam-Webnster defines determinant as: an element that identifies or determines the nature of something or that fixes or conditions an outcome. Thus, the 'Afschuiving van een bout..." or "de krachtsverdeling" DETERMINE something else - or are simply 'CRUCIAL' - or are RELEVANT to something else (calculation outcome, choice of tool or part, etc).
Example sentence:

In gasoline engines, fuel/air mixture can determine combustion chamber temperature.

In gasoline engines, the correct fuel/air mixture is crucial if overheating is to be avoided.

decisive/definitive/crucial

I know this is not exactly the dictionary definition of the word but in your context it is this measurement which is crucial for other things which depend on it. Sorry no time to google for support at the moment.

representative

I have also heard 'normative' but not as frequently as 'representative."

Hope that this helps.

Good luck!
