From the definition given - data that is measured is termed 'empirical data', but perhaps the translation is for lay-people, and not qualified Scientists?

: well, there's no doubt that primary data that are scientifically gathered through measurements and samples are empirical data, but you're making a primary translation error. The reverse is not true: empirical data are not primary data etc.

Primary data are original data that stem from controlled trials and case studies--data obtained in "experiments". The other category is integrative/synthesis/secondary data which are data combined from existing sources ( thus also from primary data).
