Or should this be 'source data (Primärdaten) and performance data (Meßdaten)

Discussion

Dr Lofthouse Oct 4, 2009:

•The word empirical denotes information gained by means of observation, experience, or experiment. A central concept in science and the scientific method is that all evidence must be empirical, or empirically based, that is, dependent on evidence or consequences that are observable by the senses. ...

Dr Lofthouse Oct 4, 2009:
The term was entered under a Pure Science category (Chemistry), not a 'Medical' category - lirka's reference is sourced from the National Institute of Health (Medical): my translation is correct (any data measured experimentally is 'empirical'), but her translation would be correct if you have just entered in under an inappropriate ProZ category
Lirka Oct 4, 2009:
@Asker Primardaten are definitely "primary" data [ original research data, not compiled from other sources]. Empirical data is something else.
nexxus2 (asker) Oct 4, 2009:
Dr. Lofthouse, do you mean empircal data = Primaerdaten.

And the sentence could be: Empirical data is scientifically measured data.

Empirical data

Empirical data = that obtained from experiments
Peer comment(s):

neutral Audrey Foster (X) : Are you suggesting that "Primaerdaten sind wissenschaftliche Meßdaten" be translated as "Empirical data" ?

From the definition given - data that is measured is termed 'empirical data', but perhaps the translation is for lay-people, and not qualified Scientists? It should perhaps have been flagged under the 'Medical ' section on ProZ???
disagree Kim Metzger : No data to back this up?

neutral Lirka : with audrey

disagree Peter Manda (X) : well, there's no doubt that primary data that are scientifically gathered through measurements and samples are empirical data, but you're making a primary translation error. The reverse is not true: empirical data are not primary data etc.

Primary data are are original data, collected with scientific methods

Primary data are original data that stem from controlled trials and case studies--data obtained in "experiments". The other category is integrative/synthesis/secondary data which are data combined from existing sources ( thus also from primary data).

Peer comment(s):

neutral Dr Lofthouse : This was entered under a pure science category (Chemistry), rather than a 'medical' trial, but your translation is correct literally - I just worked from the definition given, in the context of a 'pure' science', rather than a medical study.

agree Harald Moelzer (medical-translator) : ...'original' seems to hit the nail IMO...

neutral SusanneM : I also like the use of 'original'. Still, scientific methods are not necessarily experiments. How about "... collected from scientific experiments"?

primary data are scientific sampling data

"Meßdaten" can also be translated as "measurement data", depending on the nature of the experiment; but empirically you can't go wrong with "sampling".
Peer comment(s):

disagree SusanneM : Sampling implies that only a subset of data is considered.

primary data are scientific, experimentally derived data

That would take care of your entire sentence, I presume ?

In this paper, the overall design of Auto-Pipe is presented and a subset of its operational capabilities is described along with their use in example applications. Auto-Pipe was motivated by pipeline design issues that arise in the following application domains: networking and communications; large, mass storage based computation; and real-time scientific experimentally derived data.
