English translation: seductive

English term or phrase: as close as a guardian angel or a tempting demon
"...that we are all condemned to freedom and choice, that in philosophy, the individual and the spirit fight to the death, that this so called theoretical discipline can be ***as close as a guardian angel or a tempting demon***, that you can only find your way out of its pluralities through an act of courage rather verging on audacity. For there is no Ariadne's thread in the reflexive labyrinth . You have to make it through on your own, alone with yourself and your being, as unknown to you as to those around you".

I'm ok with the guardian angel, but it's the tempting demon that doesn't sound right. It could just be in my mind, and tempting demon is absolutely fine, but is there any other possible opposite to a guardian angel??? (the literal translation is 'tempting demon')

Selected answer:seductive
Explanation:
I would suggest "seductive".

This verb is used about the devil in both in the bible and in "translations" of the Koran

"that time, a twisted, burned, and distorted Lucifer began to roam the earth, seeking to tempt, seduce, and destroy God's new creation - man..."

Koran, CHAPTER XV., Verse 29.
He said, "O my Lord! for that Thou hast seduced me, ..."

i think so

Explanation:
I don't see why it can't be right. A demon is certainly the opposite of an angel. Whereas a guardian angel looks out for your interests a tempting demon does the opposite.

Yes Anders but tempting is often used of the devil as well as seductive. See google books references below where the actual phrase "guardian angels and tempting demons" are used and http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Qw2ItholIXQC&pg=PA68&lpg=...
