Actually I like your suggestion better than mine. I just haven't come accross depasse in that sense before - have you?

So another thought is that - assuming the pathologie is to do with drugs or alcohol - that this particular intoxication exceeds the patient's previous chronic level.

I'm not really convinced, but it might ring bells with someone who knows more...

  -> Because I did not find any reliable UK references to "chronic pathology that is no longer treatable"; it's as simple as that. I have never "heard" a GP/Hospital Consultant use the term in my interpreting capacity. I can only go on what I know and find.
