German term

Spannungsfeld

"spannungsfeld" is tricky for me here. "Area" or "field of conflict" makes me uncomfortable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Would "hot-bed of..." (as proposed in the archive) be close?

Are you sure "Spannungsfield" refers to "conflict" here? (see 'Musik im Spannungsfeld der Architektur').

tense atmosphere

He lacked political clout in the tense atmosphere of the Weimar Republic
I can't put my finger on a better word for atmosphere.

Thanks, Kim. Still plugging along with the Brill New Pauly. Vol 1 of my series (16 in the whole BNP) just appeared! Frank
