Schwindelerregend wirkt die uralte, windschiefe Holztreppe eines schmucklosen Gewerbebaus in der rue des Arquebusiers, einer kleinen Seitenstraße des prächtigen Boulevard Beaumarchais in Paris. Dass sich am Ende dieser knarzenden Stufen eines der berühmtesten Büros für Architektur und Städteplanung Frankreichs versteckt, fällt schwer zu glauben.
Im Inneren herrscht kreative Ruhe. Odile Decq schwebt durch ihr Büro. Eine Grande Dame, ganz in Schwarz, etwas unnahbar. Zu ihren überwiegend jungen Mitarbeitern scheint sie ein beinahe mütterliches Verhältnis zu haben. Sie ist freundlich, aber fordernd. Einer ihrer Studenten durfte kürzlich die sanitären Einrichtungen für die Galerie für Moderne und Zeitgenössische Kunst entwerfen, die Decq derzeit in Rom baut. Als er einen – zum Thema passenden – steril wirkenden Plan präsentierte, machte sie ihm klar, dass sie sich das Ganze „sexier“ wünschte. Eine treffliche Charakterisierung ihrer Haltung zu Design und Architektur: „Sexy sollte es schon sein.“ Ihr derzeitiges Bauprojekt in Rom, eine Galerie, die einen ganzen Häuserblock umfasst, ist extrem aufregend. Eben genau jene Art von Herausforderung, die die 52-jährige Bretonin liebt. Eher würde Decq ihren Bleistift für immer ins Federmäppchen legen, als etwas zu bauen, was sie nicht reizt.
Nur gut, dass sie damals vor vier Jahren den Hörer abhob. Ein Südeuropäer meldete sich, der durch ein Zeitungsinterview auf sie aufmerksam geworden war. Ein Journalist hatte sie gebeten, Rom und Paris zu vergleichen. „In Paris sorgen die Boulevards für Orientierung“, erklärte sie, „man kommt wunderbar mit einem Stadtplan zurecht. In Rom sollte man sich besser intuitiv treiben lassen, wie auf dem Meer. Rom ist wie Segeln.“ Der Anrufer bat um ein Treffen und zeigte ihr die Skizze einer 43,70 Meter langen Segelyacht. Nur die Farbe stand noch nicht fest. Ihre reflexartige Antwort lautete: „Schwarz“! Ihre Lieblingsfarbe, unschwer zu erkennen: das toupierte, raumfüllende Haar ist schwarz, ebenso ihre Fingernägel. Nur der Schmuck ist aus Silber und ein großer Ring an der rechten Hand rotorange. Der angehende Eigner war trotz der im maritimen Bereich unüblichen Idee sehr angetan und beauftragte Decq mit der Gestaltung des Interieurs der Wally 143 mit dem Namen Esense.
Die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Avangardisten, der in seiner ersten Segeljacht viel Platz für Parties, jeden erdenklichen Komfort und Transatlantiktauglichkeit vereint sehen wollte, gestaltete sich bis zum Schluss angenehm. „Im Bauwesen ist das eher die Ausnahme“, resümiert Decq. Doch der Vergleich hinkt ehedem: Während die Planungsphase bei Gebäuden oft Jahre dauert, lief der Bau dieses Seglers wie am Schnürchen. Im November 2003 stellte die frischgebackene Jachtinteriordesignerin erste Überlegungen an. Schon zwei Monate später wurde auf der Wally-Werft in Fano mit der Realisierung begonnen. Parallel dazu entwarf und ließ Decq das Interieur bauen – größtenteils aus besonders leichter Karbonfaser, demselben Material, aus dem der Rumpf besteht. Schließlich ist die Esense eine Rennjacht, die bei guter Fahrt und 11 Knoten Wind bis zu 17 Knoten läuft und damit die schnellste Wally-Jacht ist. Decq verpasste dem Flitzer klare Linien und kubistisch anmutende, schräge Wände. Die weißen Flächen, orangefarbenen Elemente, schwarze Regale, große Spiegel und eine raffinierte Beleuchtung wirken in ihrem Zusammenspiel wie ein durchgestyltes Penthouse-Loft an der Upper East Side.
Der Blick der Architektin war auch für die Raumaufteilung der 170 Quadratmeter unter Deck sehr förderlich: Einige Kabinen lassen sich zum Salon hin komplett öffnen und vergrößern diesen entsprechend. Eine durchaus sinnvolle Einrichtung, da sich das Schiff fast allein oder mit einer bis zu sechsköpfigen Crew und acht Gästen segeln lässt. Allerdings musste Decq dafür zäh ringen. Nach intensiver Bemühung und Berechnung wurde ein Rumpf entworfen, der zusätzlich von Spanten gehalten wird (ähnlich wie im Flugzeugbau). Trotz anfänglicher Skepsis konnten so zwei Wände eingespart werden. Auch außerhalb der Kajüte konnte sich Decq kreativ einbringen und die Esense zu einer schwimmenden Design¬ikone formen. Die ursprünglich von Luca Bassani (Inhaber von Wally) vorgesehenen großen Fenster passten nicht in ihr ästhetisches Konzept. Ihr filigraner Gegenentwurf mit kleineren Sichtluken harmonierte perfekt mit dem 185 Quadratmeter großen Teakdeck in typischer Wally-Manier, das durch zwei futuristisch anmutende Steuerräder im hinteren Teil ein optisch einmaliges Finish bildet.
Erstaunlich ist allerdings die Tatsache, dass sich die Verantwortlichen – Decq, Bassani und dessen Konstrukteur Bill Tripp – während der gesamten Planungs- und Bauphase kein einziges Mal trafen. Die komplette Abstimmung erfolgte nur auf elektronischem Weg oder über Dritte. Erst im Juni dieses Jahres kreuzten sich ihre Wege in Monte Carlo, anlässlich der Verleihung des internationalen ShowBoats Awards, als die Esense in der Kategorie „Outstanding Achievement in a Sailing Yacht“ mit folgender Begründung ausgezeichnet wurde: „Unter ihren zahlreichen Attributen zeichnet sich die ganz aus Kohlefaser bestehende Esense nach einem Entwurf von Bill Tripp durch ihr atemberaubend klares Deck aus. Es erweckt den Eindruck, als würde sich das Cockpit über die gesamte Schiffslänge erstrecken. Das minimalistische Interieur von Odile Decq entspricht ganz Wallys zukunftsweisender Philosophie.“ Ein kleiner Schritt für die Jachtwelt, aber ein großer für Odile Decq, die vorerst zu ihren Wurzeln zurückkehrt, aber offen bleibt für neue Designwelten. The ancient crooked wooden staircase seems to lead up into dizzying heights. It belongs to a plain-looking commercial building in Rue des Arquebusiers, a small side street off the splendid Beaumarchais Boulevard in Paris. It is hard to believe that one of the most famous offices for architecture and urban planning in France is hidden away at the top of these creaking old stairs.
Inside, there is an atmosphere of silent creativity. Odile Decq seems to float rather than walk through her office – a “grande dame”, dressed in all black, looking somewhat aloof. She appears to have an almost motherly disposition toward her mostly young co-workers. She is friendly, but demanding with them. One of her students was recently assigned the task of doing the bathroom designs for the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome. When he presented his sterile-looking design – befitting its purpose – Decq let him know that she wished for it to be “sexier”. The incident seems to sum up Decq's entire attitude toward design and architecture: “It should definitely be sexy.” The gallery - Decq's current construction project and a very exciting one a that - runs the length of an entire block. Exactly the kind of challenge the 52-year-old Breton loves. She would rather lay down her pencil forever, rather than take on a project which does not excite her.
It is a good thing that, four years ago, Decq took one very important phone call. It was someone from Italy who had heard about her through a newspaper interview she had given. A journalist had asked her to draw a comparison between Rome and Paris. “In Paris, the boulevards make it easy not to get lost, and you can get around with a city map,” she had explained to him. “But in Rome you should rather let your intuition lead your way. It's like drifting on the ocean. Navigating Rome is like sailing.” The caller asked Decq for a meeting. He showed her a sketch of a sailing yacht, 43.70 metres in length. Only its colour had not yet been decided. “Black!” Decq exclaimed without even having to think about it. It is obvious that black is Decq's favourite colour: her teased-up cloud of hair is black, as are her fingernails. Only her jewellery is silver, and a large ring on her right hand is a reddish orange. Despite the fact that – when it comes to things nautical - Decq's idea was rather unusual, the yacht's prospective owner was impressed, and entrusted her with the interior design of his Wally 143 by the name of Esense.
The avant-gardist wanted to see a number of aspects combined in what would be his first sailing yacht: every conceivable comfort, plenty of space for parties, as well as the ability to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Still, working with him turned out to be a pleasurable experience all the way – something that, in Decq's words, “is rather an exception in the construction industry.” But the comparison does not really apply anyway. While the mere planning process with buildings often takes years, the construction of the yacht went like clockwork. In November 2003, the newly-made yacht interior designer made the first plans. A mere two months later, actual construction on the yacht was started at the Wally shipyard in Fano, while Decq was continuing to design and build its interior. For reasons having to do with the reduction of the yacht's weight, she used mostly a particularly light kind of carbon-fiber, the same material of which the hull is made. After all, the Esense is a racing yacht - Wally's fastest one yet - which, granted the right conditions, can run up to 17 knots. Decq filled the interior with clean lines, and slanting walls reminiscent of cubism. The various details - large mirrors, ingenious lighting, black shelves, white surfaces, splashes of orange here and there – all interact and give the impression of a stylish penthouse loft on the Upper East Side.
Decq's eye for architecture also helped with the room layout of the 170 square metres located below the deck. Some of the cabins can be fully opened so as to enlarge the main salon. This certainly is a useful mechanism, considering the fact that the ship can be operated by one person only, or by a crew of up to six, plus eight guests. Decq had to use all her assertiveness to put through this plan. With much of both effort and calculation, a hull was finally designed which is additionally supported by vertical frame members(as is common in aircraft construction). Despite meeting initial skepticism, Decq was thus able to leave out two originally planned walls. Apart from doing the interior design, she was also able to apply her creativity to the ship's exterior, turning the Esense into a nautical icon of design. The large windows that Luca Bassani (owner of Wally) originally had in mind did not fit into Decq's aesthetic concept. She came up with an alternative draft, more delicate, substituting the large windows with smaller portholes. It went beautifully with the yacht's unique teak deck (185 square metres), which – done in the characteristic Wally style, and sporting two futuristically designed steering wheels – brings the yacht to visual perfection.
During the entire process of planning and construction, the three people in charge – Decq, Bassani and Bassani's designer Bill Tripp – never actually met in person, an astonishing fact. They co-operated exclusively by electronic means, or through third parties. Only this June did their paths finally cross at the international ShowBoats Awards in Monte Carlo. The Esense was awarded “Outstanding Achievement in a Sailing Yacht” with the following words: “Among her many outstanding attributes, the all-carbon-fiber Esense, which features naval architecture by Bill Tripp, has a stunningly sparse deck design that makes her feel as if her cockpit runs the entire length of the boat. Her exquisitely styled minimalist interior by Odile Decq is typical of Wally's forward thinking.” It may be a small step within the world of yachts, but perhaps a big one for Odile Decq who, for the time being, is returning to her roots but keeping her mind open to new spheres of design.

I usually translate from and into English and German, but occasionally also work with Norwegian, Arabic and Italian. I have lived, studied and worked in many different countries, which means that I often have that extra cultural background knowledge necessary for good translations, and for judging the target audience correctly. I hold two graduate degrees (one of them in Translation), have a good writing style and plenty of experience doing research. I also taught German at the university level for three years. My personal interests are literature and film (my theses are all on literature and film) - a background that often helps me bring that extra bit of creativity to the translations that require it.
