Source text - Greek Από τις περισσότερο δραματικές λέξεις που έχει ο άνθρωπος στο λεξιλόγιό του είναι η ζωή και ο θάνατος. Γιατί ο Homo sapiens, ο άνθρωπος ο λογικός, είναι το μόνο είδος που συλλογάται, που σκέφτεται, που έχει αυτογνωσία. Cogito ergo sum: σκέφτομαι άρα υπάρχω, μια αυταπόδεικτη αλήθεια που δηλώνει την αναγνώριση της ύπαρξής μας, όπως υποστηρίζει ο Καρτέσιος.
Και είναι η αυτογνωσία του ανθρώπου που το φυλακίζει μέσα στην αγωνία του θανάτου, καθώς είναι το μόνο είδος που γνωρίζει ότι θα πεθάνει. Γι’ αυτό οι πρώτες αντιδράσεις του επικεντρώθηκαν από πολύ νωρίς στη φιλοσοφική και θρησκευτική αντιμετώπιση του αδιεξόδου. Γι’ αυτό και σήμερα, που η επιστημονική σκέψη και δυνατότητα έχουν προχωρήσει, σκύβει με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον πάνω στα τεκταινόμενα και ελπίζει ότι θα απαλυνθεί αυτή του η αγωνία. Γι’ αυτό έχει ιδιαίτερη σημασία να αναφερθούμε στις γνώσεις που σήμερα έχουν αποσταχθεί σχετικά με τη διαδικασία της γήρανσης και της καθυστέρησης του αναπόφευκτου θανάτου.
Γιατί, η γήρανση είναι μια αναπόδραστη βιολογική διαδικασία, που επηρεάζει όλους σχεδόν του ζωντανούς οργανισμούς. Ωστόσο, παρά το γεγονός ότι τα επακόλουθα της γήρανσης είναι τεράστια, δεν έχει αναπτυχθεί μεγάλη και συστηματική προσπάθεια επιστημονικής κατανόησης αυτής της σπουδαίας πορείας της ζωής. Μόνο τις τελευταίες δύο δεκαετίες η επιστημονική έρευνα προσανατολίστηκε στη βιολογική κατανόηση της γήρανσης και στους μοριακούς μηχανισμούς, που σχετίζονται με τα βιολογικά εκείνα φαινόμενα, τα οποία συμβάλλουν στη συσχετιζόμενη με την ηλικία επιδείνωση της κατάστασης του οργανισμού.
Κάνοντας, κατ’ αρχήν, μια διάκριση μεταξύ της βιολογικής διαδικασίας της γήρανσης και αυτής που οφείλεται σε ορισμένες ασθένειες, οι οποίες σχετίζονται με την ηλικία, μπορούμε να πούμε ότι η γήρανση γενικά περιγράφεται ως μια χρονοεξαρτώμενη λειτουργική απόκλιση, που οδηγεί το κύτταρο σε μια ανικανότητα να εξισορροπεί εσωτερικά ή εξωτερικά ερεθίσματα. Έτσι, σύμφωνα μ’ αυτόν τον γενικό ορισμό η γήρανση είναι το αποτέλεσμα δύο ανεξαρτήτων βιολογικών διαδικασιών, της σταδιακής απώλειας της λειτουργικότητας του κυττάρου και της απώλειας της αντίστασης ή της προσαρμοστικότητάς του στο στρες. μ’ άλλα λόγια, το κύτταρο χάνει την ικανότητα της λεγόμενης ομοιόστασής του.
Η γνωσιολογική απόσταση, που υπήρχε, από την κατανόηση της γήρανσης, αποτυπώνεται με χαρακτηριστικό τρόπο στο μεγάλο αριθμό των θεωριών και των υποθέσεων, οι οποίες είχαν αναπτυχθεί σ’ αυτό το πεδίο κατά τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες. Κοντά στις 300 τέτοιες θεωρίες και υποθέσεις, για το φαινόμενο της γήρανσης, τεκμηριώνουν την άποψη ότι η κατανόηση ενός φαινομένου είναι αντιστρόφως ανάλογη του αριθμού των θεωριών για το φαινόμενο αυτό. Έτσι, δε θα έχει νόημα να αναφερθούμε σ’ όλες αυτές τις απόψεις, αλλά θα προσεγγίσουμε τους παράγοντες εκείνους που συγκεντρώνουν τα περισσότερα πειστικά στοιχεία για την εμπλοκή τους στη διαδικασία της γήρανσης, υποστηρίζοντας από την αρχή ότι δεν έχει βρεθεί ακόμα καμιά απλή και ικανοποιητική μοριακή εξήγηση αυτού του φαινομένου.
Translation - English Two of the most emotionally-loaded words of the human vocabulary are “life” and “death”. That’s because Homo sapiens, the species of rational humans, is the only species that reflects, thinks and has self-awareness. “Cogito ergo sum:” I think, therefore I am, a self-evident truth denoting the recognition of human existence, according to Descartes.
And it is because of their self-awareness that humans are trapped in their anxiety over death, as it is the only species that knows it is going to die. That’s why, from the very beginning, they reacted by focusing on overcoming that impasse in a philosophical and religious way; that’s why today, when scientific thinking and potential have advanced, humans are evincing particular interest in anything that is taking place, hoping to alleviate their anxiety; that’s why it is especially important to refer to the knowledge that has been extracted today regarding the ageing process and the delaying of the unavoidable death.
Ageing is an inescapable biological process, which affects almost all living organisms. However, although ageing leads to far-reaching consequences, scientists have made neither great nor systematic efforts to comprehend this significant course of life. Only over the last two decades has scientific research been orientated towards the biological comprehension of ageing and molecular mechanisms. The latter ones are related to the biological phenomena that contribute to the aggravation of the human body’s condition, which in turn is connected with age.
Discriminating, in principle, between the biological ageing process and the one attributed to certain diseases connected with age, one can say that ageing is generally termed as a time-dependent functional divergence, rendering cells incapable of balancing internal or external stimuli. Thus, according to that broad definition, ageing is the outcome of two independent biological processes: the gradual loss of cells’ functionality and their loss of resistance or adaptability to stress; in other words, cells lose the quality of their so-called homoeostasis.
The large number of theories and assumptions developed in this field over the last decades firmly establishes the gap between knowledge and comprehending ageing. Around 300 such theories and assumptions about the ageing phenomenon substantiate the opinion that comprehending a phenomenon is inversely proportional to the number of theories about it. Hence, there is no point in referring to all those opinions. This essay, however, will approach the factors containing the most convincing elements of their involvement in the ageing process, supporting from the beginning that a simple and satisfactory molecular explanation for this phenomenon has not been found yet.
