Source text - English All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Translation - German Eigentlich sind Reisen nur noch ein Mittel, um eine Kamera von Ort zu Ort zu tragen; die Kameralinse treibt die Reisenden mit geballter Macht umher. Und die Besucher, die so altmodisch sind, dass sie die Dinge in Ruhe und ganz unzeitgemäß nur mit dem Auge betrachten möchten, werden von den Fotografen beiseite gestoßen. Die gehen ganz selbstverständlich davon aus, dass sich nichts und niemand mehr bewegt und ihnen keiner ins Bild laufen darf, während sie feierlich den Sucher einstellen. Die komischen Figuren ohne Kamera müssen also den Weg freimachen für diejenigen, die etwas viel Wichtigeres zu tun haben. Sie müssen warten, bis die feierlichen Rituale vorbei sind und sich in Geduld fassen, während sich ganze Reisebusladungen von erleuchteten Fotografen über die Landschaft ergießen. Ganze Völker finden sich verzehrt, verschlungen, eingesogen in dieses schwarzumrandete starrende Auge und schlagen soviel Profit wie möglich aus den Unersättlichen heraus. Fotos von meinem Haus, meinem Kamel? Das kostet aber.
Vielleicht wäre das alles gar nicht so schlimm, wenn etwas Vernünftiges dabei herauskäme. Wenn am Ende all’ dieser Geschäftigkeit und dem ständigen Klicken zumindest noch nie da gewesene oder schöne und wahrhaftige Bilder entstehen würden. Leider ist es nicht so. Die Fotos sind lediglich gesellschaftsfähige Schmierereien.
Unter dem Vorwand, alle Wunder dieser Welt festzuhalten - das haben allerdings professionelle Fotografen schon viel besser gemacht und die Bilder gibt es an jeder Ecke zu kaufen - gibt uns die Kamera die Möglichkeit, allem und jedem unseren Stempel aufzudrücken. Denn was bringt es uns, Tante Thilda zuhause Postkarten der Toskana zu zeigen, wenn wir selber nicht drauf sind, um zu beweisen, dass wir dort gewesen sind?
Eine Bergkette allein ist nicht bemerkenswert, es sei denn, ich bin mitten drin. Ein Denkmal existiert nur durch meine Frau, die sich dagegen lehnt. Ein Tempel ist nur interessant, wenn man mein grinsendes Gesicht daneben sieht. Mithilfe meiner Kamera eigne ich mir alles Schöne an, nehme es in Besitz, verkleinere es, zähme es und lasse es auf meiner leeren Wohnzimmerwand neu erstehen. Source text - English The problem of being awkward with introductions is not, for many, an “unusual situation.” You may find that you are often uncertain about whether to introduce someone using their first name, last name, or both; about whether to use a qualifier (“this is my friend, ______”); even about whether or not it is in fact your responsibility to introduce two people in a given situation. But all of this is small potatoes compared with the seemingly inevitable mingling nightmare of having to introduce someone whose name you have forgotten.
It’s one thing to forget someone’s name if you’ve met them only once or twice, or if you haven’t seen them in a while. But all too often it’s someone whose name you really should know, and who is going to be insulted to find out you don’t. In other words, a faux pas in the making.
This is absolute agony when it happens, and I’ve watched hundreds of minglers try to deal with different ways, ranging from exuberant apology (“Oh GOD, I’m so sorry, JEEZ, wow, I can’t believe I’ve forgotten your name!”) to throwing up their hands and walking away. But there are better ways to deal with this kind of mental slip. Next time you draw a blank while making introductions, try the following ploy:
Force them to introduce themselves. This is the smoothest and most effective way to handle your memory lapse. When it’s done well, no one will ever suspect you. If you have forgotten one person’s name in the group, turn to that person first and smile. Then turn invitingly to a person whose name you do remember and say, “This is Linden Bond,” turning back casually toward the forgotten person. The person whose name you haven’t mentioned yet will automatically (it’s a reflex) say “Nice to meet you, Linden, I’m Sylvia Cooper,” and usually offer a hand to shake.

Vielleicht sind Sie auch oft unsicher, ob Sie bei der Vorstellung nur den Vornamen, nur den Nachnamen, beide Namen oder noch eine Zusatzinformation nennen sollen („das ist mein Freund/meine Freundin _____“). Manchmal ist es sogar unklar, ob es tatsächlich Ihre Aufgabe ist, zwei Menschen in einer bestimmten Situation einander vorzustellen. All das ist aber nichts im Vergleich zu dem Alptraum, jemanden vorstellen zu müssen, dessen Namen man vergessen hat. Eine scheinbar unvermeidliche Situation, wenn man sich bei einer Party unter die Gäste mischt.
Es ist eine Sache, den Namen einer Person zu vergessen, die Sie erst ein- oder zweimal getroffen oder vielleicht schon lange nicht mehr gesehen haben. Allzu oft aber ist es jemand, dessen Namen Sie wirklich kennen müssten; jemand der verletzt wäre, sollte er feststellen, dass Sie seinen Namen vergessen haben. Mit anderen Worten: Sie sind im Begriff, einen Fauxpas zu begehen.
So etwas ist wirklich furchtbar und ich habe hunderte von Partygängern beobachtet, die versucht haben, auf die verschiedenste Weise mit dieser Situation fertig zu werden. Von überschwänglichen Entschuldigungen („Oh Gott, es tut mir so leid, du meine Güte, ich kann wirklich nicht glauben, dass ich deinen Namen vergessen habe!“) bis hin zu denen, die sich einfach gestikulierend umdrehten und weggingen. Es gibt allerdings bessere Wege, mit solchen mentalen Ausrutschern umzugehen. Wenn Sie sich das nächste Mal nicht erinnern können, während Sie jemanden vorstellen, versuchen Sie den folgenden Trick:
Zwingen Sie die Person dazu, sich selbst vorzustellen. Das ist der problemloseste und wirkungsvollste Weg, Ihre Gedächtnislücke zu verbergen. Stellen Sie es geschickt an, wird niemand etwas merken. Wenn Sie den Namen eines Gruppenmitglieds vergessen haben, wenden Sie sich zuerst dieser Person zu und lächeln Sie.
