The icon we cherish under the name Marilyn Monroe was in truth the inspired creation of a smart, voluptuous, star struck and self-motivated fantasist named Norma Jean Mortenson. A pure product of Hollywood, California, she abides across time as brightly as two other self-inventors, Charlie Chaplin and Cary Grant – if not more so. Marilyn Monroe was a name she fashioned herself, in part from the maiden name of a mother she barely knew. When Kazan met her in the late 1940s, she was still going privately by the name Norma Jeane, still playing inconsequential bit parts in a variety of movies for 20th Century Fox.

Und Menschen, die auf der breiten Mauer vor dem Brandenburger Tor tanzen. Diese Berliner Momentaufnahmen sind längst Teil des kollektiven Weltgedächtnisses geworden.
1989 fiel die Mauer, ein knappes Jahr später, am 3. Oktober 1990 wurden die beiden deutschen Staaten auch juristisch eins. Heute, 20 Jahre später, ist aus Berlin, der einst geteilten
Stadt, längst die Stadt der Einheit geworden. Längst blüht neues Leben im ehemaligen Mauerstreifen. Und die Spuren der Mauer? Wer will, kann sie noch finden. Orte wie das Haus am Checkpoint Charlie oder die Gedenkstätte Bernauer Straße erzählen äußerst lebendig von der Vergangenheit. Aber bei allem Gedenken soll auch das Feiern nicht vergessen werden. Darum findet zum Jubiläums-Wochenende auf der Straße des 17. Juni das dreitägige Bürgerfest zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit statt.

Oggi, a 20 anni di distanza, la città di Berlino, un tempo divisa, è diventata la città dell’unità. Nuova vita nasce ormai lungo la linea su cui un tempo sorgeva il muro. E che ne è stato del muro? Chi vuole può ancora trovarne qualche traccia. Luoghi come la "Haus am Check Point Charlie" o la "Gedenkstätte Bernauer Straße" raccontano il passato in maniera oltremodo vivida. Ma accanto alle commemorazioni, bisogna ricordarsi anche di festeggiare ed è proprio questo il significato del "Jubiläums-Wochenende" sulla Straße des 17. Juni, una festa cittadina di tre giorni che celebra la ricorrenza dell’unificazione della Germania. Vi auguriamo buon divertimento a Berlino.

Source text - English Brussels, 25 June 2010 – The 9th Meeting of People Experiencing Poverty, taking place today and tomorrow in Brussels, will bring policy makers face to face with 150 people experiencing poverty from 23 EU Member States and Norway. The goal of this year's meeting is to integrate the conclusions of all previous meetings into a 10-Year Action Plan to fight against poverty through an active dialogue with EU policy makers.
The 9th edition of this annual event, entitled “Starting Point for a New Deal”, is organised by the Spanish Presidency of the EU, in cooperation with the European Commission and the European Anti-Poverty Network. “The European Council took a historic step on 17 June by agreeing on the target of lifting at least 20 million out of poverty or social exclusion by 2020. The European Commission will support the Member States in their efforts to tackle poverty and social exclusion. The goal is to combine what already works well with innovative new approaches. Let me stress that the European Year 2010 has helped build political momentum and create positive dynamics around these themes”, says Commissioner Andor László.

L’obiettivo dell’edizione di quest’anno è inglobare le conclusioni degli incontri precedenti in un piano d’azione decennale volto a combattere la povertà attraverso un dialogo attivo con i politici dell’UE.
La 9ª edizione di questo evento annuale, che prende il nome di “Punto di partenza per un nuovo corso”, è organizzata dalla presidenza spagnola dell’UE, in collaborazione con la Commissione europea e la Rete europea per la lotta alla povertà. “Il Consiglio europeo ha compiuto un passo storico il 17 giugno fissando l’obiettivo di far uscire almeno 20 milioni di persone dalla condizione di povertà o di esclusione sociale entro il 2020.
