(...) Mary falls in love with John but John doesn't fall in love with Mary. He merely uses her body for selfish pleasure and ego gratification of a tepid kind. He comes to her apartment twice a week and she cooks him dinner, you'll notice that he doesn't even consider her worth the price of a dinner out, and after he's eaten dinner he fucks her and after that he falls asleep, while she does the dishes so he won't think she's untidy, having all those dirty dishes lying around, and puts on fresh lipstick so she'll look good when he wakes up, but when he wakes up he doesn't even notice, he puts on his socks and his shorts and his pants and his shirt and his tie and his shoes, the reverse order from the one in which he took them off. He doesn't take off Mary's clothes, she takes them off herself, she acts as if she's dying for it every time, not because she likes sex exactly, she doesn't, but she wants John to think she does because if they do it often enough surely he'll get used to her, he'll come to depend on her and they will get married, but John goes out the door with hardly so much as a good-night and three days later he turns up at six o'clock and they do the whole thing over again.
Mary gets run-down. Crying is bad for your face, everyone knows that and so does Mary but she can't stop. People at work notice. Her friends tell her John is a rat, a pig, a dog, he isn't good enough for her, but she can't believe it. Inside John, she thinks, is another John, who is much nicer. This other John will emerge like a butterfly from a cocoon, a Jack from a box, a pit from a prune, if the first John is only squeezed enough.
One evening John complains about the food. He has never complained about her food before. Mary is hurt.
Her friends tell her they've seen him in a restaurant with another woman, whose name is Madge. It's not even Madge that finally gets to Mary: it's the restaurant. John has never taken Mary to a restaurant. Mary collects all the sleeping pills and aspirins she can find, and takes them and a half a bottle of sherry. You can see what kind of a woman she is by the fact that it's not even whiskey. She leaves a note for John. She hopes he'll discover her and get her to the hospital in time and repent and then they can get married, but this fails to happen and she dies.
John marries Madge and everything continues as in A.
Translation - Portuguese “Finais Felizes”

(...) Maria é apaixonada por João, mas João não é apaixonado por Maria. Ele apenas usufrui do corpo dela ao bel-prazer numa tépida satisfação do ego. Ele vai ao apartamento dela duas vezes por semana e ela lhe prepara o jantar, repare que ele nem mesmo a considera digna do preço de um jantar fora. Depois de comer o jantar ele a come e em seguida dorme, enquanto ela lava os pratos para que ele não pense que ela é desleixada com todos aqueles pratos sujos à volta. Então renova o batom para estar bonita quando ele acordar, mas quando acorda ele nem sequer repara, veste as meias e os calções e as calças e a camisa e a gravata e os sapatos, tudo na ordem inversa em que tirou. E ele não a despe, ela tem que tirar as própria roupas, e o faz como se estivesse louca pra isso todas as vezes, não é por gostar de sexo, pois não gosta, mas para que John pense que ela está a fim, pois se eles transarem com frequência, talvez isso o faça se acostumar a ela, tonando-o depedente dela até eles se casarem, mas John sempre dá o fora quase sem um boa-noite, retornando três dias depois às seis da tarde quando repetem tudo outra vez.
Mary começa a se cansar. Chorar faz mal pro rosto, todos sabem disso mas mesmo assim ela não consegue parar. As pessoas no trabalho reparam. Seus amigos dizem que John é um rato, um porco, um cão, que não é bom pra ela, mas ela não acredita. O que ela acredita é que existe um outro John mais amável dentro dele. Esse outro John emergirá como uma borboleta de um casulo, como um boneco de molas daqueles brinquedos, ou como uma semente de ameixa se o primeiro John for suficientemente espremido.
Numa tarde John reclamou da comida. Ele nunca tinha reclado da comida antes. Mary ficou magoada.
Alguns amigos disseram tê-lo visto num restaurante com outra mulher chamada Madge. Mas não foi Madge que finalmente a arrebatou: foi o restaurante John nunca a levou a um restaurante. Mary então reúne todos os comprimidos para dormir e aspirinas que consegue encontrar, e os toma com meia garrafa de sherry*. Você percebe o tipo de mulher que ela é pelo fato de não ter sido uísque. Ela deixa um bilhete para John. Ela espera que ele a descubra, a leve ao hospital a tempo e se arrependa para que, então, eles possam se casar, mas isso não acontece e ela morre.
John se casa com Madge e tudo volta ao normal.

Source text - English A REFLECTIVE APPROACH FOR TEACHING SEMI-AUTOMATIC TRANSLATION PRACTICE IN TRANSLATOR TRAINING PROGRAMS

Abstract: Translation memory systems have been promoting definitive changes in the development and contracting criteria of translations of texts in electronic format. With the purpose of examining the influence of the use of these tools in the production of translators in training, this paper presents a study proposing a reflective approach for the analysis of translations by students in academic training. For this purpose, eight participants attending the third year of an undergraduate program in Translation were invited to translate three contracts from English into Brazilian Portuguese with and without the assistance of Wordfast Classic (version 6.0). The results of the analysis of the students’ translations suggest that those who used the tool produced more uniform translations, with high similarity index between them, which may be indicative of the influence of the memory in the translation work. In view of the scarce research focused on the analysis of the way translators interact with the tools employed in their work and how they are affected by them, this study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the possible implications involved in the association between the translator and translation memory systems in the work of translation.

Resumo: As ferramentas de memória de tradução vêm promovendo mudanças marcantes nos critérios de desenvolvimento e contratação de textos traduzidos em formato eletrônico. Com o objetivo de examinar a influência do uso dessas ferramentas no produto final de tradutores em treinamento, este artigo apresenta um estudo propondo uma abordagem reflexiva para a análise de traduções por estudantes em formação acadêmica. Para esse fim, oito participantes do terceiro ano de um curso de graduação em Tradução foram convidados a traduzir três contratos do inglês para o português do Brasil, com e sem a assistência do Wordfast Classic (versão 6.0). Os resultados da análise das traduções dos alunos sugerem que aqueles que usaram a ferramenta produziram traduções mais uniformes e com alto índice de similaridade entre eles, o que pode ser um indicativo da influência desse artifício no trabalho de tradução. Tendo em vista as escassas pesquisas focadas na análise de como os tradutores interagem com as ferramentas empregadas em seu trabalho e como são afetados por eles, este estudo visa contribuir para uma melhor compreensão das possíveis implicações envolvidas na associação entre o tradutor e ferramentas de memória de tradução no trabalho de tradução.
