Source text - Dutch Beste Eekhoorn,
Vandaag wil ik je mijn herinneringen schrijven.
De herinneringen van de mier.
Mijn eerste herinnering is aan honing.
Ik voer in een bootje over honing.
De mier legde zijn pen neer en dacht: wat raar, dat herinner ik me helemaal niet. Hij dacht even na en besloot toch door te schrijven. Laat ik me dat maar wel herinneren, dacht hij.
Ik kwam bij een strand van suiker en de giraffe stond daar, boog diep voor mij en zette me op een stoel van sukade. Overal vandaan kwamen dieren aangelopen (de neushoorn, de beer, de tor, jij ook, eekhoorn, je bent dat misschien vergeten maar jij was daar ook bij) en riepen: 'Mier! Mier!'
Ik knikte.
Ze zetten taarten voor mij neer, en puddingen.
De zon ging onder voor mij, en de maan kwam op, en het regende honing.
Ik hield een toespraak en iedereen viel om van verbazing (jij ook, eekhoorn) en holde weg om nog meer taarten, puddingen, suiker, zoete noten, gelei, en gebak te halen. Ze bouwden er een paleis van voor mij en ik.
Steeds meer herinnerde de mier zich. Hij schreef uren lang door, tot het donker werd en hij honger kreeg. Als laatste zin schreef hij toen:
Dit is het eerste deel van de herinnering van de mier.
De Mier.
Translation - English Dear squirrel,
Today I want to write you my memories.
The memories of the ant.
My first memory is of honey.
I was sailing in a boat on a river of honey.
The ant put down his pen and thought: how strange. I don’t remember this at all. He considered it for a second and decided to continue writing. Lets say I remember this, he thought.
I came upon a beach of sugar and the giraffe stood there, bowed down deeply before me and placed me in a chair of chocolate. From all directions, animals of the forest emerged (the rhinoceros, the bear, the beetle, and you too, squirrel, you may not remember it, but you were there too) and called out: Ant! Ant!
I nodded.
They presented me with cakes and pudding.
The sun set for me, and the moon emerged, and it was raining honey.
I held a speech and everyone was floored by its brilliance (you too, squirrel) and ran off to get more cakes, pudding, sugar, sweet nuts, jelly, and baked goods. They made a palace out of these sweets, for me and myself.
The ant began to recall more and more memories. He wrote for hours, until it was dark and he grew hungry. As final sentence he wrote:
This is part one of the memories of the ant.

Source text - Dutch Op een ochtend keek de mier omhoog en zag de eekhoorn op de tak voor zijn deur zitten.
'hallo eekhoorn,' zei de mier.
'Hallo mier,' zei de eekhoorn.
'Wat ben je aan het doen?' vroeg de mier.
'Ik schrijf een brief.'
'Aan wie?'
'Aan jou.'
'Aan mij?' zei de mier verbaasd. 'wat schrijf je dan?'
'Ik schrijf net,' zei de eekhoorn, en hij las vervolgens voor: 'hoe gaat het met je?' Hij keek op van de brief en vroeg: 'hoe gaat het eigenlijk met je?'
'Dat schrijf ik je wel,' zei de mier.
De eekhoorn wist plotseling niet meer wat hij verder moest schrijven en kauwden op zijn pen.
'ik weet niks meer te bedenken,' zei hij.
'schrijf je dat?' vroeg de mier.
'nee, dat denk ik.'
'schrijf dan maar,' zei de mier terwijl hij diep nadacht 'dat je nog een grote pot honing hebt die op moet en of ik langs kom...'
'Kom je langs?'
'schrijf het nou!' zei de mier ongeduldig.
De eekhoorn schreef het en zette zijn naam er onder. Hij gooide de brief in de lucht en de wind voerde hem mee en bezorgde hem bij de mier.
'aha, een brief.' zei de mier, en hij maakte hem open.
'mijn brief!' riep de eekhoorn.
'sst,' zei de mier. 'ik lees.'
Hij las de brief, kauwde even op een grassprietje, fronste zijn wenkbrauwen, ging op zijn linker achterpoot staan, krabde achter zijn oor, en schreef toen een brief terug:
Beste eekhoorn,
Dat is goed. Ik kom er aan.

Translation - English One morning the ant looked up and saw the squirrel sitting on the branch in front of his door.
Hello squirrel” said the ant
“hello ant” said the squirrel
“watcha doing?” asked the ant.
“I’m writing a letter.”
“To whom?”
“To you.”
“to me?' said the ant, surprised. “What are you writing then?”
“I was just writing,” the squirrel replied, and he began to read, “How are you doing?” He looked up from his letter and asked “so how are you doing?”
“I’ll write it to you,” said the ant.
Suddenly, the squirrel didn’t know what else to write, and chewed his pen.
“I can’t think of anything,” he said.
“Is that what you’re writing?” asked the ant.
“No that’s what I’m thinking.”
“So write…” the ant said, as he pondered deeply “that you have a big pot of honey waiting at home that needs to be finished and ask if I’ll come over…”
“are you coming over?”
“Just write it!” the ant said impatiently.
The squirrel wrote it and signed his name underneath.
He threw the letter up in the air and the wind picked it up and delivered it to the ant.
“aha! A letter!” said the ant, and ripped it open.
“My letter!” said the squirrel.
“Quiet.' said the ant. 'I’m reading.'
He read the letter, chewed a blade of grass for a bit, furrowed his brow, stood on his left back leg, scratched behind his ear, then wrote a reply:
“Dear squirrel,
all right. I’m coming.
Ant”
