Translators just didn't get recognition, they didn't expect to make much of a living, just get by. Very few people were actually trained as translators, but most had a solid college education and a solid knowledge of languages, at least their own language. I had a friend who fell exactly into that category and my circle of friends expanded to include other translators. I found them to be much more interesting as people, and discovered that we often had similar life experiences. I never had trouble making friends, but I always felt "different" and I'm sure they felt it too. When my friend retired, she recommended me as her replacement. I now entered the realm of Reinsurance, of which I knew nothing. I was also the only translator there, and didn't have much to fall back on. However, it was another notch up.... පරිවර්තකයන්ට සැබවින් ම පිළිගැනීමක් නොලැබුණි, ඔවුහු ජීවත් වීමට උපයනවාට වඩා වැඩි යමක් බලාපොරොත්තු නොවූ අතර, හුදෙක් ජීවත් වීමට ප්‍රමාණවත් තරම් ඉපයූ හ. සැබවින් ම ඉතා සුළු පිරිසක් පරිවර්තකයින් ලෙස පුහුණුව ලබා සිටි නමුත් බොහෝ දෙනෙකුට ශක්තිමත් පාසල් අධ්‍යාපනයක් සහ අඩු තරමින් තමන්ගේ භාෂාව පිළිබඳ ශක්තිමත් දැනුමක් තිබුණි. මට හරියටම එම ගණයට වැටෙන මිතුරෙකු සිටි අතර මගේ මිතුරු කවය වෙනත් පරිවර්තකයන් ද ඇතුළත් කිරීමට පුළුල් විය. මිනිසුන් ලෙස ඔවුන් බෙහෙවින් සිත්ගන්නාසුළු බව මට පෙනී ගිය අතර, අපට බොහෝ විට සමාන ජීවිත අත්දැකීම් ඇති බව පෙනිණි. මට කිසි දිනෙක මිතුරන් ඇති කර ගැනීමේ ගැටලුවක් නොතිබුණි, නමුත් සැම විටම මට මා අන්‍යයන්ගෙන් "වෙනස්" බවක් දැනුණු අතර, ඔවුන්ටද එය එසේ වන්නට ඇති බව මගේ විශ්වාසය වේ. මගේ මිතුරිය විශ්‍රාම ගන්නා විට, ඇය මාව සිය තනතුරට ආදේශක නිලධාරියා ලෙස නිර්දේශ කළා ය. මම දැන් මා කිසිවක් නොදැන සිටි, ප්‍රතිරක්ෂණ ක්ෂේත්‍රයට ඇතුළු වී සිටිමි. එහි සිටි එකම පරිවර්තකයා ද මා වූ අතර, දුෂ්කර යැයි කිව හැකි එතරම් දෙයක් නොතිබුණි. කෙසේ වෙතත්, එය තවත් ජයග්‍රහණයක් විය....
