Su aspecto no difiere mucho de los demás zorros. Su frente es ancha, el hocico es pronunciado y angosto y las orejas son triangulares y largas. La cola es de color grisáceo, bastante larga y posee abundante pilosidad. Este zorro es de contextura física poco robusta. La coloración general del cuerpo puede variar de un bayo-amarillento con pelos negros en el dorso a un color oscuro homogéneo. Los ejemplares mas conocidos son aquellos que presentan un manto gris uniforme, compuesto por pelos negros y blanquecinos. Los flancos, las extremidades y la cara son por lo general de un color bayo-rojizo. La garganta y parte de la zona ventral del cuerpo son blancos. Por otra parte, los ejemplares de esta especie presentan una mancha oscura en axila y en la parte inferior del muslo.
Distribución
Esta especie se encuentra presente a lo largo y a lo ancho de todo el territorio argentino.
Hábitat
Habita en todos los ambientes abiertos tales como: monte abierto, bosque abierto, estepa, pastizal y arbustal. Se refugia principalmente en cuevas y huecos de distintos tipos y tamaños. Las cuevas pueden pertenecer a mulitas, peludos, zorrinos y vizcachas. El zorro gris se muestra bastante adaptado a la presencia humana y a las modificaciones que este produce en el ambiente. Es común observar ejemplares en zonas periurbanas, rurales y agro-ecosistemas
Alimentación
Su alimentación responde a la de tipo oportunista, pudiendo consumir, según la disponibilidad en el hábitat, desde semillas y frutos hasta presas de origen animal como: libres, tinámidos (aves terrestres), pequeños mamíferos, reptiles, insectos e inclusive carroña.
Reproducción
El zorro gris se reproduce durante los meses de calor que coinciden con la abundancia y disponibilidad de presas. Las hembras alcanzan la madurez sexual a partir del año de vida y el período de gestación dura aproximadamente entre 50 y 60 días. Transcurrido este período nace una camada cuyo número oscila entre 2 y 5 crías. Las mismas se refugian en cuevas o madrigueras que cavan sus padres o bien cuevas de otros animales como armadillos, zorrinos, vizcachas, etc.
Comportamiento
En líneas generales, presenta hábitos solitarios, aunque machos y hembras se reúnen para afrontar juntos la época de cría. Sus hábitos son crepusculares y nocturnos sin embargo se lo puede observar activo en cualquier hora del día. Tiene hábitos territoriales, demarcando su territorio mediante arañeos en el suelo, orina y heces.
Situación actual de la especie
Las diferentes especies de zorro desde siempre han entrado en conflicto en con intereses humanos, pues actúan como depredadores de animales domésticos y de fauna silvestre de valor cinegético (Sillero-Zubiri et al., 2004; Sillero-Zubiri y Switzer, 2004). Por otra parte son objeto de trofeos de caza deportiva y su piel es bastante requerida por la industria textil. El resultado de ese conflicto ha sido que muchas especies de cánidos tengan una larga historia de persecución por el hombre, en ciertas ocasiones con un alto grado de coordinación e incluso con subsidio por parte de gobiernos a distintos niveles. Las tres especies de zorros del género Pseudalopex no son la excepción a ese patrón. Sin embargo, han mostrado una notable resiliencia a la intensa presión de caza a la que han sido sometidas, tanto con fines comerciales como de erradicación (Sillero-Zubiri et al., 2004; Novaro et al., 2005).
Status de Conservación
Según U.I.C.N.: según la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza esta especie se encuentra bajo la denominación de Preocupación Menor (LC).
Según la resolución Nº 1030/2004 de la S.A.yD.S.: Especie No amenazada
Según C.I.T.E.S.: esta especie se encuentra incluida en el Apéndice II de La Convención Internacional Sobre el Tráfico de Especies Silvestres.
Translation - English Species description The Pampas fox is similar in appearance to other foxes. Its head is wide, the snout is pronounced and narrow, and the ears are triangular and large. The tail is grayish in color, somewhat long, and of abundant pilosity. This species is of a slender build. Coloration of the body ranges from brownish-yellow with black hairs dorsally to a homogenous dark color. Characteristic specimens have a uniform gray pelage, composed of mixed off-white and black hairs. The sides, extremities, and face are rust-colored. The throat and part of the ventral surface of the body are white. Additionally, characteristic specimens feature a dark spot in the axilla and on the inferior part of the thigh.
Distribution This species can presently be found throughout all of Argentina.
Habitat The Pampas fox inhabits all open habitat such as: barren highland, open woodland, steppe, pastureland, and scrubland. It dwells principally in burrows and dens of various sizes and types. It sometimes uses burrows excavated by armadillos, skunks, or viscacha. The Pampas fox has proven to be very adaptable to human presence and modifications to the environment. These foxes are commonly observed in suburban, rural, and agricultural areas.
Diet In terms of diet, the Pampas fox is opportunistic, being able to cosume, according to availability in its habitat, anything from seeds and fruits to prey of animal origin: tinamous (ground-dwelling birds), small mammals, reptiles, insects, and even carrion.
Reproduction The Pampas fox reproduces during hot months, which coincide with abundance and availability of prey. Females reach sexual maturity at one year of age, and gestation lasts between 50 and 60 days. Following this period, the female gives birth to a litter, ranging in size from 2 to 5 pups. The offspring dwell in burrows or dens excavated either by their parents or by another animal, such as armadillo, skunk, viscacha, etc.
Behavior In general, this species is of solitary, although males and females stay together while rearing their pups. The Pampas fox is crepuscular and nocturnal; nevertheless, it has been observed to be active at any time of day. It displays territorial behavior, marking its territory by means of scrapes, urine, and scat.
Current situation of the species The different species of fox have always been in conflict with human interests, since they depredate domestic animals and game species (Sillero-Zubiri et al., 2004; Sillero-Zubiri and Switzer, 2004). On the other hand, they are hunted for sport and their pelts are somewhat desired in the textile industry. The result of this conflict is that many canid species have a long history of persecution by humans, in some cases with a high degree of coordination, to the point of government subsidies of varying levels. The three fox species of the genus Pseudalopex are no exception to this pattern. Nevertheless, they have displayed a notable resilience to the hunting pressures to which they have been submitted, whether for commercial or eradication purposes (Sillero-Zubiri et al., 2004; Novaro et al., 2005).
Conservation Status
IUCN: according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, this species is classified as a species of Least Concern (LC).
