I suppose that this is something that is open to discussion, and it might need a moderator, unless the discussant was a moderator rather than an opponent.
So I guess, it might depend upon what the party, the discussant, thought their role was.

agree  Diarmuid Kennan: I agree that the meaning is discussant, but not a document, at least in this context. However, it appears it is also not an opponent at an examination, as I previously proposed.
