I'm looking for the most natural English way to translate this idea- I came up with IRON GRIP which translates the similar pugno di ferro-any better suggestions or should I just go with this?

il monachesimo «di fatto non è altro che l’istituzione con la quale la Chiesa, nel momento in cui sembrava consegnarsi completamente nelle mani dello stato pagano, riesce nuovamente a strapparsi al suo ferreo abbraccio»
