Overtime is the first thing that came to mind, but "overtime" means working more hours than the standard schedule; being that this case involves hardship, I believe they're talking about "accomodating" the needs of the employee or whomever so that they may take care of their personal business and still work their full schedule or as close to it as they can.. i.e. instead ow fowring 8-5, they may work 10-7 kind of thing or skip a day and work 12 hours/day instead of 8 the rest of the week
