Italian term or phrase: termine di paragone
From a geological survey.

"La calibrazione del metodo ha permesso di attibuire ai livelli cineritici di interesse un range di valori di resistività tra 2 e 8 Ω∙m, da utilizzare come termine di paragone nell'interpretazione delle successive tomografie"

There is a back-translation of another similar term in the glossary (yardstick), but its not identical.

But I think it may not be a geological term but a vstandard stock phrase.

Suggestions.

Before reading the context, my first thought was "term of comparison" which I think would be fine for a philosophical context, but not here.

Explanation:
I don't see that there is anything wrong with "term of comparison". You'll find it well represented in the field of geology on Google, though there's nothing wrong with "benchmark" either, to be sure.
