From the same poem. I understand "maatafah" to be an envelope, so I'm not sure how to translate it in connection to "nigun". Any ideas?

neutral  Eynati: I don't think your article is in the right place: it's the mantle of an abstract melody, not the particular melody.

Thanks, but this doesn't sound very poetic to me!

disagree  Eynati: nigun is not 'tune' - it's a far more general concept.

Another tricky metaphor

Nigun can be a specific melody (but not 'tune', which is 'mangina', sometimes loosely 'lakhan'), but only in specific liturgical contexts. In a general context, it is more abstract and general than 'a tune' or 'a particular melody'. It is closer to 'melody' as a general musical idea.

Eynati, thank you so much for your insights and helpful comments. "The veil of melody" is lovely, and I'm sorry I can't give points to more than one person. But I prefer "mantle" which has less of a connotation of hiding something than "veil."
