The word "Lappenbildung" is occurring a lot in my present text, and I'm having some difficulties with it. I have "flap creation" in my glossary, but I'm really not sure that's right at all. It might be "flap formation", but I'm none too sure about that either. Maybe they mean "Flap procedure"? But then why bother with Bildung? Please help me find a correct translation that I can use for this and maybe other texts with the term. TIA.

The first occurrence ... "flap procedure" as intented surgical step.
However, the second "Lappenbildung" has to be avoided, therefore it is "flapping" - [my opinion, not sure, really!]

Comment: "I was a bit startled by "flapping", initially, but gfish gave a quite convincing reference. But then I tended to agree with SYates that maybe it was "flap procedure". Now after reading MMUlr's answer, I've decided to hedge my bets and use "flap procedure" in the first instance and "flapping" in the others, though I'm not totally sure about it. But it does seem reasonably plausible, and I'm sure it's not too far off the mark. Many thanks to you all for your input - appreciate your help."

flap procedure
I think you are right with this, as it fits in each case. From the links that I found, the procedure is always that of creating a flap.
